My 16 month old boy loves this horse. He unwrapped it christmas morning and was just stood there touching its nose and its ear. It took ages to get his other presents opened as he kept going back to this one. It is lovely quality.....really easy to put together in a short time. My only complaint would be that the sides of the straight pieces of wood that affix under the horse are actually very sharp...my teenager caught his ankle on an edge and had an inch long gouge in his skin. Really they just needed to be rounded off. It rocks nicely and I am very pleased with it and so is my little guy. Highly recommended, but adults mind your ankles.

My parents decided they wanted to buy our 15mo son a rocking horse for Christmas and asked me to pick out one. Melissa and Doug products are a favorite in our house so as soon as I saw this product, I was fairly certain this was the one! Our horse's name is Ligtning and both my son and my 3yo daughter love him! The base is made of sturdy, attractive wood and is a nice platform for boarding (mounting?) Ligtning. The horse itself is soft and the realistic horse sounds he makes when you press his ear are a bonus! My son can board and deboard the horse all by himself as well as make him rock once on. Buy this for your child, you won't be sorry!

Of all the rocking horses we looked at this one was our choice. We were at a toy store and my daughter would not get off the horse. I found it online for a much cheaper price. Both my girls love the horse and have not grown tired of it. They get on and rock to their hearts delight. We have had it over a year and the kids have not tired of it.

This is great for 2-year olds! It helps them to self-soothe. However, I would have greatly appreciated a place for the child rider to prop their feet. There are no foot rests. Other than that...it's pretty cool. My grandchild loves to make it whinny!

I was so excited to give this to my little one for her birthday and thought this would be something that could be cherrished. Instead the quality is horrible. The "fur" is a scratchy/rough material (not stuffed animal-like at all) and the thing smelled like it was dipped in turpentine even after sitting in my living room for a week. I'm sending this back even though I'll end up loosing out on the shipping costs both ways and a 15% restocking fee. It's still worth it since there is no way I want my kid playing with this. I'm really dissapointed. Do NOT buys this horse.

My kids (2 and 5) were so excited to receive this for Christmas! I was a little worried that the 5 year old would be too big for it and she really is too tall but doesn't seem to mind or notice. I love that weight isn't an issue with a 150# weight limit. My only problem with this is that with only 4 screws to put it together (easy, right?) it took us almost an hour to do it with lots of frustration. My husband was ready to send it back. The angle of the horse's legs and the angle of the holes in the wood where they were supposed to go together weren't the same, making it virtually impossible to even line up the holes let alone the angles. Again, very frustrating. Now that it's together, it's very sturdy. Maybe it was a fluke they weren't lined up, maybe not. Overall very pleased other than our bump in the road!

I wanted a rocking horse that combined the quality of a hard wood rocker and the soft feel of plush.
Overall, this Melissa and Doug horse is a great value for the price.

THE PLUSES:
It is very good looking, realistic and soft to touch.
The face is well made and attractive. The mane and tail are soft and do not shed hairs, even when pulled by baby. The body is a nice deep brown velvet, very soft.
Although the age recommendation is 2 yr+, it is easy to climb up and down for my one year old (25 lbs, 32 inches) who is not walking quite yet. She also figured out how to rock it the first time!
The sounds you get when you press the ear are realistic, not too loud or too long, not annoying at all: some "clip clop" then some neigh.

THE CONS:
The wood used for the rocking part, although hard wood, is not the best: it is some light pine with big knots which make it fragile (we received a first horse with the rocking part broken in the package just 2 days before Christmas; fortunately, Amazon saved the day by shipping a replacement instantly and making the return totally painless). I oiled and polished the base and it looks very nice but the knots could be weak points.
The saddle material is a bit disappointing (plastic with a clothes backing) but seems to do the trick just fine.
The horse is quite large which could be a plus or a minus: it takes quite a bit of space (you need 2ft x 3ft at least of free floor space to play) but on the other hand, I could see my daughter using it for 2-3 years before outgrowing it.

Assembly was easy: the toy comes in two pieces with the horse body detached from its rocking base and all you need to do is screw each leg to the base. You have to proceed with a little caution as the legs need to be slightly stretched out to match the holes on the base. 5 painless minutes!

Overall, this is a beautiful toy, especially for the price. Baby really likes to play with it, several times a day for the past 2 weeks she's had it. I would recommend it, if you have the space.
And what a hit under the tree on Christmas morning!

Our one year LOVED to rock...anyway and every way he could, so naturally we thought a rocking horse would be perfect for him. We chose this one because of the plush body and the positive reviews it's received. Our little boy LOVES this horse. He loves the sound the horse makes and has even figured out how to start the sound himself. He can't quick climb on it himself, but I will often find him standing next to it(standing on the rails) holding on to both handles and rocking the horse. "Rocky" has become a member of our family and a regular part of our day. We are very pleased with our purchase. The quality of the rocking horse is outstanding and I feel that the price was right in line for the quality of the product. Very, very pleased!!!

I bought this for my daughter's 1st birthday and she loves it! She's a little small and a little young to use it all by herself, but she's already learned how to rock the horse herself and she loves to hug it because it's so soft. It seems very sturdy and it makes realistic horse sounds when you press it's left ear. You have to first insert batteries under the horse's belly to make the sounds. I hope this toy will be something she can grow into more as she gets older and enjoy for years to come.

Several of my daughter's friends have rocking horses and I love ours the most! The horizontal slats across the bottom provide the perfect platform for little ones to stand on. I have had this horse for almost a year now, and have had no problems with it. My daughter and her friends loves riding this rocking horse.
