I got this for my two year old so he could "read" at night. He likes to take his books to bed, so I thought he'd love it. He likes to play with it in a dark hallway, but refuses to have it in bed with him! Of course, that's no fault of the toy. :)

As for the flashlight itself, it's really cute. Bigger than I expected. I thought it'd be something like a small maglight, but it's a big handful for a toddler. Not a complaint, just an observation. The button is easy for my son to find and use, which is good. A light push is all you need. The light is bright enough without being blinding. I wouldn't go staring into it, but I'm comfortable leaving it with him knowing he can't burn out the eyeballs of his baby brother who shares his room.

Note that this is a TOY flashlight. It's not all that bright. I wouldn't recommend it for situations where you are dependent on an actual flashlight, like camping.

The only downside was that mine arrived broken. The bulb was tilted, and there is no access to the bulb so I couldn't try to fix it. The light flickered and wouldn't stay on. I called the company and they sent me out a replacement. They said it'd take two weeks, but it arrived in one. The second flashlight came in a huge box with TONS of bubble wrap. The packaging was opened too, so I'm thinking they opened it up to make sure it worked! Of course, it worked just fine. :) I really appreciated the care. And the guy on the phone was friendly, polite and efficient.

The flashlight does feel a little flimsy. And like I said, you can't access the bulb to change it. So when it burns out or if it breaks the flashlight is history. But it's an inexpensive toy, which is just fine. I'm very happy with it!

UPDATE: We've had this for several months now and it still works great. My son has developed a fear of the dark and takes it to bed with him now. He falls asleep with it on often. And I still haven't had to change the batteries! This really is a neat little light.

UPDATE: It's March 2011. Still haven't had to change the batteries. Light still works and looks brand new. It HAS to be on all night almost every night with my son. He also takes it into the dark hall to play. His baby brother plays with it and bangs it against the hard wood floor. This light is amazing! Even if (when) it does break, I will definitely buy a new one. Upped my review to a full 5 stars.

UPDATE: Ok, this thing is starting to scare me. It STILL works. I'll find it under the bed buried in stuffed animals, on, so it's likely been on for a several days. I haven't changed the batteries once. It's the end of July 2011, so it's been nearly 9 months and still going strong (though maybe a tad dimmer).

We got this for our night owl of a son who is 2 1/2. Regardless of the fact that we put him down at a reasonable time he usually up chatting, singing, etc. for 1-2 hours before finally drifting off. We thoughtt that if he had a flashlight with him in bed he could read through a few books in his crib.

This flashlight is perfect and he loves it! It's got a simple button to push for off and on, the light is not too bright and not too dim and regardless of how long the light is on it doesn't get hot. We are then able to go in after he finally is off in dream land and click the flashlight off and remove it from his crib. He also loves to run around with this flashlight at night and turn off the household lights so he can use it. Good fun for mighty cheap!

Yes, like a lot of the other reviewers, I have to say that the overall quality of this flashlight is low. My youngest daughter bought one for our granddaughter (her niece) with her own money and was very disappointed in its lack of function upon opening it. We decided to use the situation as a learning opportunity and contacted Melissa and Doug to report our lack of satisfaction. I spoke with a very responsive and personable young woman who dutifully took my information and promised to make things good by honoring my request for a replacement. Well, they followed through and we received a working replacement in just over two weeks (again, as promised). It's still not a very high quality or durable flashlight, but I was very favorably impressed by their responsiveness and commitment to customer satisfaction. You'll have to decide if the chance of getting a good flashlight is worth the price, but the company is top-notch. I can tell you this: my grandchildren will be seeing a lot more of the Melissa and Doug name on their toy shelves. And my daughter has learned that giving a company a chance to make good when things go wrong is well worth the effort.

Despite some negative reviews, I decided to buy this flashlight for our 2.5 year old daughter. As not an expensive item, and since it was just a flash light (what can break on a flashlight?), I made the purchase. I wanted a somewhat 'softer' flashlight that wasn't really bright, and looked fun...something she can play with and take to bed with her.

From the time we received it, it was very touchy...it didn't take much shaking for the light to flicker off and on frequently. For the first evening, she was running to me every few minutes handing me the flashlight and saying 'on' because the flashlight stopped working again. So I finally decided to investigate more. When you remove the top of the flash light, and turn over the lens cap, you can see the top metal contact that the battery is suppose to connect to for current to pass through. That metal contact sits in a round pink tub and anchors inside it by the small groves in the pink tub. It was obvious at that point that metal contact was not fixed in position, but rather slides up and down in the pink tub due to those groves...if it slides too far down, it doesn't' make proper connection with the battery. Taking a very small flat-head screw driver (could probably use tip of a knife as well), I put it in the groves below the metal contact and applied enough pressure (alternating from grove to grove) to slide it back to the top of the pink tub (don't slide it to high that it pops out completely though as may be a pain to put back in). It's easier to do than it sounds.

Once I got it to the top, I screwed the lens cap back onto the flashlight...it now works perfectly, without so much as a flicker! Our daughter loves it and carries it around everywhere. She's dropped it on our tile floors several times and it still works great. I'm now very happy with the flashlight as it was exactly what we were looking for. But I have to take off a star just because of the poor design for the metal contact that allowed it to move. Though easy to fix, I shouldn't have to fix a new product...and expect a little better from Melessa & Doug. But in this case, it was worth it to get what we wanted.

If they hate the dark or you go on a 'camping trip' inside the play tent....this is FUN
It is a very soft light which at first you may dislike but then you realise it will not 'blind' your child
It shines just enough to let them see there is NO MONSTER in the room
It also can be placed under the chin to tell 'stories'
All with a soft low light
The batteries seem uneneding in life..even when kept on all night and it's been a month and they are still going strong
This keeps them feeling secure but not awake all night !!
We really love it as HE really loves it

PS This would NOT be good as an outdoor flashlight..it is strictly for security and indoor fun.
It is not made that way
I hope I have helped you in your decision

I was looking for a flashlight that was easy for my two-year-old to turn on and off. This has a very easy button. My son really loves it and we use it to help him go to sleep by himself. I have only had it a few months, so I don't know long-term durability, but so far, so good.

This was a fantastic present for my daughter, 2 1/2, who was mesmerized by the flashlight we used for Trick-or-Treating at Halloween. I knew I had to get her one for Christmas, but her own size that she could turn on and off by herself.

I got her the blue one because we're not really a pink and prissy household. Regardless, she would love it if it were puke-colored, probably.

I used this as a stocking stuffer, but it became her favorite present and she brought it to her grandparents' houses throughout the day. Most nights, she'll ask for it to keep with her for bedtime. She's much more content to stay in bed when she has it.

Just to reiterate: MY 2-YEAR-OLD STAYS IN BED BETTER BECAUSE OF THE FLASHLIGHT.

If that's not the best reason to buy it, I don't know what is.

We've had it for about a month with regular use and the batteries are still going strong. And it's been dropped and thrown (tantrum-related, of course), and it has held up wonderfully. Oh, Melissa and Doug, you did it again.

This is a wonderful TOY flashlight for children-- it is perfect for little hands and is very well-made. Just be certain that you are aware this is a TOY. It has a light bright enough for children to have fun shining around, but not bright enough to use as an actual flashlight or in case of an outage.

It is very well-made, bright & colorful, and the battery seems to last FOREVER.

For Christmas, two family members and I all had the same idea - my 1.5 year old would probably have a blast with a flashlight. One family member got a Disney one, one got a dollar store flashlight and I got this one. They all took 2 AA batteries, and to be fair, they've all been equally fun - that is, one hasn't gotten more play than the others. Except - well, now the other two are dead and have been for a couple weeks, and for some reason this one is still going strong. I've read the same in other reviews and I don't know why it is, but I'm not complaining.

Flashlights are the answer to my toy prayers on road trips that go on into the sunset hours. One can keep him entertained for half an hour, which is like a toddler miracle. This is nice and chunky, easy to hold, and he has figured out that he can reach up and hang it on the hook above the passenger door in the car. Cute, and I'm always partial to stuff that isn't plastered with licensed characters.

I bought this toy for my 2 year old daughter for Christmas. When she opened it she LOVED it. I was so happy I got this for her because she loves playing with flashlight's. When I picked it up and tried to turn it on, while she was opening the rest of her presents, it stopped working. We tested our batteries to see if that was why, but it wasn't. I am so disappointed because this would have been so perfect for her because it's easy to turn on and off and was bright. But what should you expect for such a cheap price.
