We purchased these blocks for our great-nephew. He loves them and plays with them constantly. His mom and dad even join in on the fun! We remember his dad playing with similar blocks when he was a child. They are simple but inspirational toys. They make a wonderful, inexpensive gift. The Melissa and Doug toys tend to be durable, well built ones. This product is definitely recommended.

My son has autism and his program supervisor requested we get this set for him about a year and a half ago. These blocks have been used in therapy and regular playtime almost every day since then.
Pros: Nice bright colors, easy to play with. My 4-year-old and 2 1/2-year-old both love them! There is a good variety of shapes. Cons: The wagon isn't very realistic as a storage option for toddlers and preschoolers. Usually they end up in a pile on top of the wagon (if I am lucky!). I recently discarded the wagon and now store the blocks in a rubbermaid container. Also, the painted blocks started to chip paint off the corners a few months ago.

This is a great little introductory set of blocks. My personal preference is for unpainted blocks (for tactile reasons), but the colors are very engaging for more visually-oriented children. Block play is a staple of childhood, and these blocks serve their purpose nicely. The only trouble with them is that there aren't all that many of them, limiting the sorts of structures that can be built. If your budding architect is troubled by this, Melissa and Doug offer boxes of additional blocks for a reasonable price (though they won't fit into the handy wagon). These colorful blocks can also serve a variety of purposes in pretend play. All in all, they are great for what they are. I just find myself wanting more.
