I bought these for our 14-month old and nearly 3-year old. I was debating between a couple sets of these, the $20 100-piece set of smaller blocks, and the $50 60-piece unit block set all by Melissa and Doug. I went with this set, thinking I could add another set if the boys really like them.I opened them today and was disappointed to see that the column-shaped pieces are actually flat on one side. I'm also disappointed that the pieces are lightweight. (The lighter weight will be nice since they won't hurt anyone should they be thrown!) They feel cheap and there was an odor--I'm guessing it was the paint. I like that they are the larger size, but I don't think they are standard unit blocks. My son enjoys standing the pieces up but doesn't try to build anything. We tried "making people", and there was only enough half circles to make one head, so we had a headless boy and a cute girl with a triangle tunic. There weren't many blocks left over--with the set we borrowed from a friend, we easily made several people and built a "road" for the friends to walk down together. If I were to do this again, I would wait and purchase the larger unit block set since it's a main-stay in preschool and kindergarten classrooms. I think they would be heavier and easier for building larger and stronger structures and easier for our littlest one to use. These will work fine, but I won't be buying a second set!

These blocks and the wooden 'wagon' are very well made. My 2 yr old likes to pull the little wagon around more then play with the blocks. But they are a really nice set of blocks. I would recommend these.

These blocks are nicely made, and my daughter enjoys them for the most part. I was really looking for a wagon of blocks like I had when I was young, and this one is no match for it. My wagon had three times as many blocks that were nice and big for building big "castles." These are small, and one cannot build too much with them. There aren't enough blocks for a good base.

I bought this for my 18 month old son and we both love it! He can sit and play with the blocks for about 30 minutes straight building towers. He then puts the blocks in the the box (not in order) and pulls it along. He loves to run with it and when the blocks fall out he laughs and puts the blocks back in and runs again. It has given him tons of hours of fun and laughter! Great toy even at an earlier age!

I bought these for my two year old,we both love them. There are endless opertunities for playing while learning. At home we practice our colors, our counting, and our shapes. We even practice our puzzle skills just by trying to fit them back in the box. These blocks can be pulled inside or out and they are light enough to fit in a child's backpack. My duoghter and I are very happy with aii of our Melissa and Greg pursaches.

The Melissa and Doug blocks in a rolling wagon are a great toy. My grandson loves it. It is very sturdy and will hold up with a one year old's playing with it. He can also pull it around with the attached rope, so that is good also. I would suggest this toy to my friends.

Splinters and toxic paint,

I had these blocks home and out of the box for less than an hour when I discovered that one the pieces had a splinter. I sanded it down and checked over the other pieces only to discover a second splinter. When I went to sand this one, a 1.5-inch and very sharp piece popped off. Since I was primarily building towers to amuse my son and he did little more than topple them a couple of times, it's not like they were heavily abused during those 60 minutes. When I did a Google search, I also discovered that four very similar Melissa & Doug Toys (the sorting cube, pound-a-peg, stacking train, and 25-piece stacker toys) have been recalled in Canada due to excessive levels of barium in the paint ([...]). This toy wasn't listed, but I find it hard to believe that they'd use a diffent type of paint for this one block set. In short, the toy is pretty and educational, but if your child ever puts anything in his or her mouth, I'd definitely swing well clear of this one. |
