4.0 out of 5 stars wooden train set
I bought this for my son because I know there is no lead paint in Melissa and Doug products. He loves the train itself. However, 3 of the trains, the passenger ones are longer than most train cars and have wheels that pivot, this causes problems when trying to move the train on the tracks. My 3 year old gets frustrated because these three train cars are always coming...

2.0 out of 5 stars A sturdy, good looking train that has a couple of design problems.
As one other reviewer has already pointed out, the cars are quite long and its easy for them to come off the track on sharp corners.

The other issue is the way they are constructed, with pivoting trucks at the bottom of the train attached to the body by rivets. The bottom parts of the rivets hang down under the train and catch on places where the tracks...

He got these for Christmas and now, almost a month later, he no longer wants to use the three troublsome cars.

As one other reviewer has already pointed out, the cars are quite long and its easy for them to come off the track on sharp corners.

The other issue is the way they are constructed, with pivoting trucks at the bottom of the train attached to the body by rivets. The bottom parts of the rivets hang down under the train and catch on places where the tracks are not completely level. Any track joint that sticks up a little bit or a countersunk screw that is not completely flush hits the train and makes it come off the rails. One could say the problem is with the track and not the train, but my son's set has several different brands of trains and this is the only set that has a problem on the track.

I was excited to find a modern looking train to add to my son's set, but I do not think this train was the best choice. I don't recommend it, especially for younger kids who get frustrated when things don't work right.

Toy train set was purchased for my 2 yr old son who LOVES trains. The trains offer just the right amount of interaction, fun and learning without being overwhelming.
I love that the trains are wooden, come in a case with compartments and have magnets to connect each together.
My son totes this toy all around town with him!

These are very high quality in my opinion. My son is rather rough on them and they have held up great. They work wonderfully on the track and look like they are going to hold up to many years of play.

I got this train set and the figure 8 track for my 3 yr old nephew. He loves trains but plays with this only occasionally, probably in part because he has tons of other toys in addition to this. He seems to like it but he gets frustrated when the trains don't all stick together if you try to hook up all 6. After pulling it across the short track and around the bends, one train in the middle will quickly fall off track and break the set. So, we've found that if he only has two to connect together, he gets less frustrated. The other 4 just seem to get left on the tracks and not pulled along.

I bought this set to add to my 3 year old's train set and it looks and works great! I also love the wooden display/storage case. Like all Melissa & Doug toys, it is made well; great colors and quality. You will not be disappointed in this set!

Purchased this as a gift for my 2.5year old son. He loves trains, and these trains work great on his Imaginarium (Toys-R-Us brand) train tracks. He has played with them for hours at a time since receiving them, and I anticipate many more hours use from yet another great Melissa and Doug product.

These trains stay together well and are easy enough to work that my 2 and 4-year-olds can do it by themselves. These are a durable fun toy for little boys obsessed with trucks and trains. The only thing that would have made this toy better was if the wooden box it came in had a lid.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too big for our tracks, April 1, 2011

This review is from: Melissa & Doug Wooden Train Cars Set (Toy)
I ordered these to have as extra trains along with the Swivel Bridge Train Set, partly because Amazon had them as sort of a recommended accessory. Well, most of these trains are too big for that train set, the trains are sort of double length which make them hard to drive around sharp corners. Maybe if our son was older (he's only 25 months) he'd be able to navigate these trains around the track better, but the track that comes with the swivel bridge train set is sort of twisty and curvey, so these trains are too big, get stuck going around the corners and fall off the tracks. So we need to buy more tracks to make for a smoother ride.
