5.0 out of 5 stars Melissa Etheridge: Live and Alone, the Deluxe DVD

I was washing my car in a little car wash across the street from Christy's (the other Bono) restaurant when I remembered that that night was the premiere of the Movie of Melissa Etheridge's Live and Alone Concert.

So I went.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Performance hindered by weak Presentation
As expected you will most likly find Melissa very entertaining, but the quality of the filming leaves something to be desired. The lighting is poor and the entire concert is filmed in a grainy film look...especially grainy in low light scenes. All this is not good for viewing on a large screen TV.

On the other hand the Audio is in full crystal clear 5.1 Digital...

5.0 out of 5 stars Melissa Etheridge: Live and Alone, the Deluxe DVD, October 2, 2002

This review is from: Melissa Etheridge - Live... and Alone (Two-Disc Deluxe Edition) (DVD)
.
I was washing my car in a little car wash across the street from Christy's (the other Bono) restaurant when I remembered that that night was the premiere of the Movie of Melissa Etheridge's Live and Alone Concert.

So I went.

It is just like being at the concert except that you get to sit in a real seat.

It begins with some footage from the last time Melissa sang in a particular bar in Pasadena, California in 1987. She had so much promise and poise, even then. The bar scene flows into the time before right before this Concert which was filmed at the Kodak in Hollywood, in 2001. Even Stephen Spielberg hobbles into this pre-concert footage.

The concert is The Perfect Melissa Concert: the photography is great; her expressions are fierce and funny; and her voice just fills up the screen and the hearts of those who hear her.

Among other songs, she sings the two piano songs, Please Forgive Me and the Weakness In Me; and other songs in which she accompanies herself on the guitar, Down To One, Lover Please, American Girl, Chrome, Scarecrow, The Only One, Come To My Window, Somebody Bring Me Some Water and The Way I Do. There are other songs; I'm not a scribe.

Chrome is really a beautiful song and beautifully done.

Lover Please, shows Melissa's pain to the point of pleading but also, through the use of that garble-machine into which Melissa sputters the words `do you want me' (I think) and through the use of that harsh yellow light, I sense real anger, anger that I never heard in the song without the visual.

The photography and editing are excellent, occasionally there would be three shots of her singing on the screen at once - the movie was really well cut and crafted.

And Melissa is Melissa. It is extraordinary.

The deluxe DVD of this concert/movie will also contain footage of Melissa at home.

It is a must for every music lover.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Melissa Etheridge, November 16, 2002
This review is from: Melissa Etheridge - Live... and Alone (Two-Disc Deluxe Edition) (DVD)
Why did we have to wait so long for such an awesome live DVD of the genial Melissa Etheridge.
This DVD will captivate you infront of the TV for the 2 hour Concert. Make sure you have got some space to dance ...
The Dolby Digital Sound (5.1) makes you feel being right infront of the stage and that feels great.
Etheridge plays all by herself and the show is very diversified.
12String, Electric, 6String, Doubleneck, Piano, Harmonica, percussion on the back of a guitar and acapella.
She impresses as she allways does. My personal highpoint is her performance of "Ready to Love" a song she wrote when she was 17 but nerver recorded it. The bonus material on disc 2 is also very special and I devoured it.
Thank you Melissa for finally giving the fans what they allways wanted ... I can't wait to get the DVD with a band performance next year ;-)

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Melissa Etheridge - Live... and Alone (Two-Disc Deluxe Edition) (DVD)
What was I thinking? I only ordered this two-disc deluxe edition two weeks ago. To think all this time could have been rocking with Melissa!
I was in the audience for the first night of this concert tour in Washington, D.C. To hear her talk about how she hoped her audience realized this wasn't a "watch Melissa sit on a stool and strum her guitar" concert made me realize how important her audience and fans are to her. She performs her heart out and gives everything she has to her audience. Be sure to look for all the extras in this dvd. I almost missed the behind the scenes at several of the concerts. There is also a clip of her getting ready to go on the road and you get a glimpse of her home. I can't wait to see her live again. Thanks for the dvd Melissa! People, check out the "Lucky" dvd too. It is incredible.

Ok my wife and I just finished watching Melissa's "Live & Alone" DVD premiere on Dish on Demand. And right of the bat I'd like to say that we can hardly wait to see this highly awaited DVD's content in full once the release of it rolls about! We've been devoted fans of Melissa's for years now and seen her numberous times in concert ... this woman is sure to deliver a performance like no other in her genre ... and she never disappoints! We will definately be spending the extra buck or two on the deluxe version of this DVD, as it will certainly be worth seeing the little extra tidbits; such as her cute intimate moments w/her new found love, Tammy! Hey, why was the [great] radition of Crimson 'n Clover cut --- what a bummer! Keep it precious Melissa --- Love from your fans, Kay and Les

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic!!, December 17, 2002
By
Living in Denmark, I've never had the chance to see Melissa live. So the release of this dvd, was a personal highpoint for me in 2002. Eagerly awaiting the release and then having to wait for the shipment as well. But Halleluja! It was worth the wait. Melissa's voice is as strong as it's ever been and she is, I think, underrated as a guitarist... let's just say she can stand up to the best of the male guitarists. I've had the chance to show some of my friends the concert, and although they had no clue to who Melissa Etheridge were, they were totally amazed! As one friend put it, "You really know she is speaking the truth, when she sings". This is truly as honest and personal as it gets.
I recommend this as 2002's BEST BUY.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's the song - not the producing, December 5, 2004

This review is from: Melissa Etheridge - Live... and Alone (Two-Disc Deluxe Edition) (DVD)
Now here's one for everyone still believing that a song must do the job without extensive studio-work, hiring a zillion producers and fueling it all up with yet another brilliant brand new digital-effects-toy.
If a song works, it works with just one singer and just one guitar to take care of the backround.
What should I say?
The songs work.
The singer does, too (by the way)...
You love your music honest and "handmade"? This could be your favourite DVD.
I bought it just a couple of days ago, and no other disk has entered the slot of my player ever since.
The special features are interesting (to say the least), the concert is just brilliant and I recommend it to everyone, anytime.

Mammoth Melissa fan that I am, this first official Melissa DVD release has been an xciting event for this music fan - I received the DVD this morning and already have been engulfed by the electricity of this solo concert performance in LA, as part of Melissa's International live + Alone Tour. Few artists, save Springsteen, with whom Melissa has been compared, have ever ventured a solo tour without band or backing support. Melissa returns to her bar-performance roots and gives what I can only describe as a mesmerising rock performance of her anthology of hits & back-catalog. Flawless vocals, energetic guitar playing and that engaging stage presence which Ms Etheridge commands, you cannot help but feel you are watching an artiste in her prime who does not reply on pyrotechnics, ... dancers or session musicians to convey her music- as these fans can testify at the show. Standing throughout, they lap up Melissa's energy. Top notch performances throughout, but kudos to the energy of Bring Me Some Water & The Different and the stunning delicacy of my personal fave The Weakness In Me (available on Nuthin But A She Thang cd). Chills galore!! The 2nd disc is brimming with additional features as described on this URL. All I can say is that rock's formost female singer (along with La Benatar) is quite simply one of the most talented all round performers of our day. Your Xmas stocking is not complete without this!!

Having seen Melissa Etheridge in concert several times Down Under I could not wait to watch this DVD.
I found it to be very raw and full of emotion in absolute Melissa Etheridge style. If you are a true fan of Melissa's you will love this DVD.
Disc 1 The Concert, a celebration of Melissa's music and of the journey that has helped inspire and create this music, is down to basics just Melissa and her guitars. The sound is raw and emotion is high.
Disc 2, gives a small insight into Melissa's behind the scenes life. Not many stars would take a camera into their home. There is also a fairly informal interview where Melissa talks about her thoughts and experiences on Sept 11, plus footage of the tour.
To Melissa THANKYOU for a courageous and BRILLIANT DVD.

I saw this tour and now I can have it to watch whenever I want. Melissa is one of my favs and this is why. She is so talented and this DVD captures it, just her and her guitar! The worst is when an entertainer can't change things up, when the concert sounds just like the CD. Melissa changed things up w/ this whole tour. She has proven to be one of the most important women entertainers of our time. This is a must have for any Melissa fan and for anyone who appreciates great rock music. This DVD will not disappoint, she dishes it up and serves it well!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really meant a lot, April 18, 2003

This review is from: Melissa Etheridge - Live... and Alone (Two-Disc Deluxe Edition) (DVD)
This DVD meant a lot because I was in Fort Worth, Texas for the Sept. 11 concert that was cancelled. As we all watched the world fall apart that morning it was surreal at best.

I finally am able now with this DVD to see the concert I missed.

It is clear that she is still very much in love with Julie as you see her eyes when she sings her songs. I thought I'd get bored with a solo acoustic tour but I was very wrong, this DVD is amazingly powerful and captivating.

Her version of Joan Armatrading's song "The weakness In me" was just fabulous. She really connects to the audience and speaks from the heart.

I think that Melissa, as a songwriter, is so warm and inviting because of that ability to connect with the audience on a very personal and heartfelt level. She's all about heart and being herself and you can't help but love her for that.

You'll enjoy all of this.
