4.0 out of 5 stars Five of my favorite MM songs on this collection, February 25, 2001

Had this on LP for years. I purchased it on CD (from Japan) about two years ago. I had forgotten how much I really like this collection. "Pretty Girls" has a great almost disco beat, very catchy. The lyrics make this one memorable. A good sense of humor. "Whenever I Call You Friend" is without a doubt one of her best written and performed songs. I like her version better than Kenny Loggins. It has a sincerity that I like. "Fire In The Morning" is a nice romantic piece. MM always puts this one down but we all know it's a good song. "Lights Of Dawn" is one of my two favorites on this CD. The lyrics are simple, to the point and poetic. I can play this one over and over and over. "When We Loved" is one that I did not remember from the LP. It is the other favorite on this CD. It's another being in-love song without being sappy. When I first purchased this CD I played this particular piece several dozen times. Couldn't get enough of it. I remember lying in bed with this tune playing in my head. Couldn't recall where I had heard it. Then it clicked that it was the MM song I had been playing. The lyrics remind me of "Second Avenue" as performed by Art Garfunkel. The song has one of those intoxicating melodies your head won't let you forget. Like I've said in other MM reviews. I usually love half of an MM LP and the other half is filler. Never bad songs just not my type. This collection reminds me of her "For The Working Girl" CD. Commercial, yes. But good music, with exceptional lyrics, and one of pop's best voices.

4.0 out of 5 stars Melissa Manchester albums and CDs, September 22, 2003
This review is from: Melissa Manchester (Audio CD)
I had five LPs and three CDs of Melissa Manchester. She is still wonderful singer and her voice was and of course is still spectacular. I love to read the lyrics and listen to her songs at the same time. One of my five LPs of Melissa Manchester was not on the list while I searched thru Amazon.com that I really wanted very much. It was called Melissa Manchester "Help Is On The Way." I like one of those songs on that album was "Talkin' To Myself" and also, "Monkey See and Monkey Do" that Patti LaBelle sang the same song as Melissa Manchester sang before. I also searched CD of Melissa Manchester "For The Working Girls." But it was not on the list. I was kinda of disappointed that some of them were not on the list. I really hope someday many albums that Melissa Manchester under Arista, MCA and other record labels sangs in 1970, 1980 and 1990 will be on the list thru Amazon.com so I would love to order more CDs of Melissa Manchester.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Her Best, December 1, 2000
This review is from: Melissa Manchester (Audio CD)
One of the greatest female songwriter/singer of our times and yet none of her albums were released on CDs anywhere except in Japan (which are almost impossible to find). This wonderful album showcases both Melissa's songwriting and singing talents with wonderful classics like Whenever I call you Friend, Don't Want A Heartache, Fire In The Morning, It's All in The Sky Above. Well produced and highly enjoyable, this remains one of Melissa's most listenable and yet classic albums. Unlike her later albums for Arista and sole album for MCA, Emergency and Mathematics which are filled with forgettable syn-pop, this album, produced in the late 70s, uses "real" band and are filled with wonderful compositions that suited Melissa Manchester better. Amazon has now managed to get special orders for four of her albums in the 70s (hopefully they are in fact available), and let's hope for "For the Working Girl" (another great, if not best album of her career) and "Hey Ricky" which I know were also released in Japan. Get all these precious releases on Amazon!

4.0 out of 5 stars Her most commercial set., December 4, 2000
By
Alan Russo (Cambridge, MA USA) - See all my reviews

This Lp was released hot on the heels of the success of Don't Cry Out Loud in 1979. Pretty Girls was the first top 40 single from the Lp, had a slight taste of disco and was a change of pace from her traditional ballads. It was followed, of course, by the simple hit ballad Fire In The Morning. She slows the pace and shares vocals with Arnold McCuller on her own rendition of her top 5 hit she co-wrote with Kenny Loggins, Whenever I Call You Friend. Since this LP was designed to promote single after single, it has a very comercial feel with songs like When We Loved. But there are still some of her own styled songs like the song she wrote Lights Of Dawn. Holdin' On To The Lovin' is a midtempo tune frequently played on the radio. Don't Want A Heartache should have been a pop/rock hit. Other tracks include I Know Your Love Wont Let Me Down, How Does It Feel Right Now and It's All In The Sky Above.
