5.0 out of 5 stars One of Her Best
I have read a number of Caldwell's books and this is up there with the best. Melissa is a lovely 20 something year old female in the 1800's who is besotted with her literary father who is a vicious culprit although she is too "innocent" or dumb or whatever to recognize it. She marries a bookpublisher neighbor, hoping to keep her brother in school and help her...

1.0 out of 5 stars I would give it no stars if that were possible
Sorry, I can see I'm the party pooper here, but I couldn't even make it through the book. I was bored out of my gourd. The pace is super slow, the narratives verbose. I will admit, however, that this genre is not my bag. It's like most of the classics I've read...it's very dark and "Wuthering Heights". So I will concede that the style of writing and storytelling is...

I have read a number of Caldwell's books and this is up there with the best. Melissa is a lovely 20 something year old female in the 1800's who is besotted with her literary father who is a vicious culprit although she is too "innocent" or dumb or whatever to recognize it. She marries a bookpublisher neighbor, hoping to keep her brother in school and help her sister with her poetry ( which she has copied from earlier poets), neither of whom care for her interest in them. Add a vile sister in law who wants nothing but to get rid of Melissa and you have a wonderful Gothic tale. I wish there were more like this

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Good Novel by Taylor Caldwell, June 3, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Melissa (Hardcover)
This the story of Melissa Upjohn and her fathers vicious attempt, from the time she is a child, to destroy her soul, her mind, and her future. Melissa must succeed in overcoming this evil which she has never suspected while trying to keep her marriage together. She must also endure the plotting of her sister in law, Arabella, and her own sister Phoebe.

Once again the "innocent" trait is strong in this book as in "Ceremony of the Innocent", but I assure you there is no formula that Taylor Caldwell uses. This book, though it had a similar theme, was unique from the others. Overall, it is a good book, and I believe those who read it will like it. Though it is not my favorite of Taylor Caldwell's, it is definitely a good story and well written at that.

I haven't read this book yet as summer is so busy. If the book is by Taylor Caldwell I know I will like it. She has been one of our great writers and I've read most of her books. When I start reading them I have a hard time putting them down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taylor Caldwell, November 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Melissa (Paperback)
If you like Taylor Caldwell, you will love "Melissa." It is about a selfish, devious man who uses his wife and children to make himself look good. In saying that, of course, he looks good only to himself as everyone else sees him as the lazy, selfish, egotistical man that he is. Only his daughter, Melissa, sees him as he wishes her to see him and she adores him, thinking he is intelligent and wise, not realizing that he is using her writing and publishes it as his own. When finally she does see the truth, she understands the man she married (the publisher of her father's books that she felt forced to marry even though she profoundly hated him), deeply loves her and she almost lost him in her false worship of her demented father.

1.0 out of 5 stars I would give it no stars if that were possible, November 18, 2011
This review is from: Melissa (Hardcover)
Sorry, I can see I'm the party pooper here, but I couldn't even make it through the book. I was bored out of my gourd. The pace is super slow, the narratives verbose. I will admit, however, that this genre is not my bag. It's like most of the classics I've read...it's very dark and "Wuthering Heights". So I will concede that the style of writing and storytelling is not my preference. If you're a fan of Taylor Caldwell's writing, then you'll probably like the book. Chances are her other books are similar styles.

I would give it NO stars if that were possible. My mom read it and enjoyed it. Said it was "quite different". Quite different indeed :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars very weird, November 26, 2006
This review is from: Melissa (Hardcover)
I give this four stars because to give it three stars would misrepresent the effort and skill that the writer put into the story. However, when I first read this story AS A CHILD, I thought the story was pretty bad and unwholesome and really was not happy that I had read this. In hindsight, the book described two people who had narcissistic personality disorder and one of them was a psychopath. It was a pretty sophisticated book with many details but at the time, I was creeped out and almost had a heart attack reading it.
