Not bad for a kit,
By
This review is from: Melissa's Tamale Kit, 2 kits (24 Tamales) (Misc.)
I made 36 tamales today (3 kits of 12), the first time ever to make tamales. Not bad, though I wish there were more specific tips (more than provided on the label) on how to form each of the tamales and additional filling recipes. I found that my tamales were a bit on the mushy side after an hour's steaming and wasn't sure if that was to be expected. It all worked out in the end though. Let your tamales cool down and they'll firm up just fine.

Tons of tamales!,

I bought this kit after trying to make handmade tomales. They took to much time, so I thought a kit would help speed things up.Made about 18 tamales, I stuffed them with goat cheeses. Great! Took about an hour to make, cutting down about 30 minutes the other way. Good if you want to try something out.

Inspect the corn husks,
This review is from: Melissa's Tamale Kit, 2 kits (24 Tamales) (Misc.)
First, I found it disturbing that the sell by date on the outside of the package was 12/27/11 and the expiration date on the package of corn husks was 12/10/11. Shouldn't the "sell by" date be the same or earlier than the expiration date of the product inside the package? I'm not sure if the company put that sticker on the outside package or if my grocery store did. Either way, disturbing.
My experience gets worse. I noticed black spots on some of the husks and decided to rinse them before putting on the masa. One of the husks had a large brown spot. I looked a bit closer and saw it was some sort of squished bug. Needless to say, I can't comment on how the tamales taste once assembled since I lost my appetite and threw out the husks and masa. They might be wonderful - I personally will never find out because I will never purchase this product again. Note: I did not purchase this product from Amazon. I purchased a single kit from my grocery store. The packaging on mine is a little different than the kit in the picture. The corn husks in the picture look dry, but the corn husks that came with mine were pre-soaked and vacuum sealed in plastic.
