5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best coffee ever
After my last coffee maker died (the fourth or fifth one in just eight years), I was sick of the electric coffee pot. This very simple set-up was inexpensive and doesn't have any electrical parts to break.

3.0 out of 5 stars A stable work horse
I've used these before when I was a bachelor. They are simple reliable work horses. Designed with ease of use and no mechanical parts,I like things like this. We bought it for camping because the old burner type perculator would always end up with grounds in the coffee and the coffee tasted re-cooked or burnt. Now we simply boil water for my tea and her coffee! Wahhh...

After my last coffee maker died (the fourth or fifth one in just eight years), I was sick of the electric coffee pot. This very simple set-up was inexpensive and doesn't have any electrical parts to break.

The best thing, though, is that this makes the best coffee ever. Seriously. Here's the method: I grind my beans right before brewing. I pour boiling water over the grounds, just enough to soak them. Then I pour again to fill the filter with water. And I stir with a spoon. Pour and stir, pour and stir, until all the water has gone through. Simple, easy, and amazingly good coffee. It's way better than anything I got from my overpriced electrical machines.

As a kid in the 70s and 80s, my parents had one of these. Not being a coffee drinker, I always thought it was embarrassingly low tech. Now that I'm an adult (though still not a big coffee drinker), I wanted something inexpensive that wouldn't take up a lot of counter space, would be easy to care for and would make decent coffee. After looking at various options, I finally settled on this one, and I'm glad I did. Not only does it work perfectly well, as advertised, it also makes great-tasting coffee (which is more than I can say about the little stovetop percolator I tried before investing in this one). It's also easy to store in my cabinet when not in use.

Two additional notes: The coffee maker calls for size 6 filters, and those are great to have when you're making a full pot. But if you're just making coffee for 2-3 people, I've found size 4 filters work fine, and they're cheaper and easier to come by. I've also found that the coffee filter cone will also work with an insulated carafe I bought separately.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic and Simple, March 14, 2006
The Melitta was a product that I looked for in stores for years. Of course I found it on Amazon. So simple, so fast, so great. I'd recommend this over any fancy electric coffee maker.

I went to every box store looking for this. Not one to be found. All were selling the exact same automatic systems that, surprisingly, are much more expensive. I was able to locate one at a small independent department store (not many of those) and at Amazon (at a much better price).

A pox on box stores.

I am pretty much convinced that all coffee makers can make good coffee if:

1. The beans are good
2. The beans are ground freshly and of the right grind for the situation
3. The water is good and of the right temperature
4. The filter is good.
5. The ratio of coffee grounds to water is correct.

After all that, it is a matter of taste. Strong, mild, decaf, even politically correct, there is coffee for everyone and it is easy to buy almost anywhere now.

The Melitta doesn't get in the way of brewing the coffee you like. There is nothing in the design that makes it hard to use or compromises the taste. And, although it doesn't have 1/10 the style of the Chemex, it does not crack easily and is very affordable. I wonder, though, about how long they will be on the market. They are hard to find and I would guess that Melitta would much rather sell the automatic ones. There are piles of No.4 filters everywhere, but the No.6 Melitta size is hard to find.

Oh, and for those that lauded the unit because it "doesn't use electricity" might want to think about that...clue:do you only eat raw food?

We've used one of these for years and love the simplicity and the quality of the coffee. I was quite upset when we left our last one behind while on vacation, but found them for sale here on Amazon. The biggest problem with them is finding the No. 6 filters if you need to make more than a couple of cups - they are almost impossible to find in any of our local stores. You can find the No. 4 filters, which will do two large cups, but that is all. If you come across the No. 6 size, you had better stock up.

5.0 out of 5 stars And when we found the Holy Grail, it was. . . really cheap!, March 7, 2008
This review is from: Melitta Cone Filter Coffeemaker 10 Cup, 1-Count (Grocery)
Have gone through quite a number of brewing methods but this was not only the best yet, but also the cheapest. Frankly, we bought it on a flyer thinking, wotthehell, if we don't like it we've only spent 12 bucks. Had just had an expensive coffee system break down and our old percolator was worn out. This makes great coffee and super-easy cleanup after - good if you compost the grounds. Filters are cheap. But mainly, the coffee is great and it's simple. Get a good hot water heater like the Braun and great coffee is just a few minutes away. Should have done this a long time ago!

This makes far better coffee than my old Gevalia coffeemaker (the freebie they send when you sign up for their mail-order club.) I'm able to control the temperature of the water which I believe is the most important factor in making a great cup of joe. I pour the water in at just under boiling and keep the kettle on the heat while I'm brewing so that when I add more water it is the correct temperature -- I try to maintain about 205degrees throughout. It's simple and it works. It'd be perfect if the glass carafe were replaced with a thermal carafe, with a small 'window' for checking water level. However, thermal carafes are widely available (I use the one that came with my Gevalia coffeemaker) so this is a minor complaint. Outside of a French Press, this makes the best-tasting coffee of any method I've tried (I haven't tried cold brew yet, but have done percolators, auto-drip, press, and vacuum.) Another small complaint is that the instructions are a little vague -- if you really want to make a great cup of coffee, experiment with the amount of coffee (should be about 2t per cup), grind (I use fine with the manual drip) and water temperature (about 200-210) and, of course, bean and roast (I like a moderate to light roast - as unhip as that sounds, I believe the coffee flavor is more complex and, well, tasty, with these roasts.) Highly recommended.

My mom has been using this carafe to make coffee forever. But she cannot find it in the stores, so amazon is the best source. It is the freshest way to make coffee and is simple to clean.

Our old Melitta broke one day; we use it to make tea each morning. We tried three stores in our area and could not find another one similiar to the one that broke. Amazon.com had the exact set. The Melitta coffee pots are good products at a very reasonable price, and of course, are quite versatile.

If you prefer to make your own coffee instead of relying on a machine to do the work, this is the product for you. It is very simple to use and provides excellent coffee (if you start with quality beans). Just put your coffee grounds in the filter in the top section (about 1/3 cup for 8 cups of coffee), pour hot water into the filter (requires 3 pours for 8 cups), keep the burner underneath on low to keep it warm, and you have fresh coffee. I have been using it for years and love it.
