5.0 out of 5 stars Great Item
This coffeemaker is really great. I'm always running late in the morning and now I don't have to worry about waiting to catch the weather portion of the daily news. I can run out the door with my coffee and know if I need to grab an umbrella or warmer coat. I just wish I could get one for my cottage in the North Woods (coverage isn't everywhere).

I purchased this item because of the good inital reviews however, I have just received my replacement coffeemaker and it has the same problem as the first one I received.

Look at the picture of the Coffeemaker. Do you see the metal plate that covers the buttons? That plate slides down and makes the buttons stick. You are unable to turn the coffeemaker on/off, press the up/down & timer buttons because of it.

Additionally, the original coffeemaker failed to make coffee as programmed about every other time it was set?

I would steer clear of this item. It's great when you can get it to work but because of the obvious engineering defects (see other reviews with the same problem)it is more of a hassle than it's worth; especially at the current price.

I guess all the time and effort into getting a coffeemaker to tell the weather made the designers forget about basic functionality!

All in all I would definitely recommend this for those who like a great cup of coffee with an added bonus!

1.0 out of 5 stars Defective and can not keep warm for more than 1 hour, February 23, 2007

WHY WHY WHY didn't I listen to the reviews? I guess I was excited about the "coolness" of this product.

I cleaned the maker 2 times as instructed. Let machine cool over night. Grinded and brewed my Starbuck French Roast, poured a cup, replaced carafe, saw message on screen ...something like "NBT short" (DEFECT?) then went back to weather screen. This had turned the warming plate off (which will only stay on for 1 hour after brewing). I tried to turn warming plate back on... which requires the ON/OFF button which won't work because it thinks you want to brew more, and when there's no water, it tells you that and won't turn on. SO you can not turn the warming plate on after it turns itself off without brewing more coffee!

I did find the coffee was plenty strong enough, though. I like strong French Roast coffee.

Looks: Plastic looked cheap, but stainless steel was ok. Overall ok looks.

I bet I can buy 2 separate pieces for the coffee maker and weather station for less money! Guess I won't buy a Melitta again!

Amazon shipped to me super quick - literally next day (must have been in the warehouse right down the street). However, now I guess I have to pay for the shipping both back and forth. So much for super saver shipping. I should have bought it at Target for slightly more, I could have returned it for no loss of $.

The coffee pot came with the down and timer buttons stucked together. Sent it back and received replacement quickly. It was great when it worked, after the 3rd day it didn't come on as programed and the down button got stuck again. The weather display was neat, too bad it didn't work out. I think there is a design fault on the machine. But I have to say Amazon has great customer service, we received our replacement very fast.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great cup of coffee, but bad design, March 5, 2007

Recieved as a gift from my parents. Made 2 pots of coffee before the machine broke. The down button got stuck (seems this has happened to others) making the machine unusable. I will try the melitta grind and brew without the weather because the buttons are different and hopefully won't stick. Also the reviews for that machine are great, and it is about half the price of this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars This thing freakin rocks!, January 20, 2007
This review is from: Melitta ME1MSB Smart Mill & Brew 10-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
Was originally concerned about the looks/quality of the unit from the pic, but it looks much better once you get it out of the box. The grinder works very well, easy to clean (vs some reviews of competitors products).

It's a bit pricey, and I'm concerned about MSN's dedication for the weather info- but I guess we'll see how long it lasts. Even if it doesn't, it won't detract from the great coffee this thing makes- just a bit of the "wow" factor!

I repeat and strongly support the comments of Mike C. and wish I had read his review prior to buying this coffemaker on a "special" 5 months ago. When it works, it does a good job of grinding and brewing, but almost every day there is some kind of aggrevation.
-- the metal plate that covers the front slides down and makes the buttons stick. You can rap it from the bottom and free up the buttons, but not for long. If you rap it too hard, it goes too far up, also making the buttons stick
-- about a third of the time, it doesn't start at the programmed start time (yes, I verified it was set the night before)
-- when manually starting, sometimes the center start button will start the cycle, but sometimes you have to first press the button in the upper left, then the center start
-- the "weather screen" is essentially useless unless your eyes are at the same level it is. Unless you're looking pretty much straight on, it's not readable. That means either the coffeemaker is on a high shelf or you've bent over, reading it sideways or upside down
-- the "keep warm" termperature is marginal, maybe good for coffee taste, but not really very hot, and the function seems to turn off after about 45 minutes
-- the grinder mechanism and basket are awkward, both to clean and to insert back into the coffeemaker, three pieces. It's much easier to put back in if you first take out the carafe

I would not purchase this item again, no matter what the "sale price"

This is the best grind and brew coffee maker I have seen. Easy to operate and easy to clean. We have had it for 5 months and not a single problem. Great tasting coffee every time. The timer allows you to wake up to the smell of freshly brewed delicious coffee.

1.0 out of 5 stars Spotty Performance, August 20, 2007
This review is from: Melitta ME1MSB Smart Mill & Brew 10-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
This review concurs with many reviews that the electronic functions of this coffee maker has fundamental flaws. The major flaw with this coffee maker is that it does not hold the settings if it loses the FM data signal. If the signal is lost the pot does not know what time it is and will not automatically brew coffee using the timer. We live in an area that has the FM radio signal, but the pot constantly loses the signal resetting the pot. I have been unsuccessful in making a pot of coffee using the timer mode.

Overall the weather functions are interesting, the pot makes a good cup of coffee, but I want a pot that makes the coffee automatically in the morning. I have returned this coffee maker for one with a simple timer.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love the nice, fresh aroma, June 7, 2008
This review is from: Melitta ME1MSB Smart Mill & Brew 10-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
I love this machine. It has worked wonderfully, great tasting coffee everytime from the freshly ground beans. I even enjoy the sleeping cat, and whoever thought we would go to the coffee maker to find the weather forecast? A nice extra touch. The only drawback is the difficulty in turning the hotplate part of the machine back on after it goes out after one hour. Overall, I would highly recommend this coffee maker.
