4.0 out of 5 stars It really does brew fast.
We trusted the Melitta name and bought this "Fast Brew" model without the usual research about a year ago. It is not perfect but it works quite well for the price.
Pros: 1)It uses standard #6 paper cone filters. 2)The autocutoff allows you to steal a cup of coffee before brewing is complete. 3)The digital timer turns on the maker so you can wake up to already...

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
We used this coffeemaker for less than a month when it just stopped working. The lights went on but no coffee brewed & the unit did not get hot. When we called the number in the brochure, we did not receive any help. (There are no trouble shooting hints in the material accompanying the coffeemaker.) We are very disappointed since we liked the coffee, the design, the...

3)The digital timer turns on the maker so you can wake up to already brewed coffee. 4) It brews coffee really quickly. 5) The design of the carafe is great (compared to my previous coffeemaker,... The lip is less likely to drip when pouring, the handle seems better balanced when you hold a full carafe and it has a clever plastic strip that protects your hand from the hot glass.
Cons: 1)The coffemaker will overflow when brewing if the carafe is not properly seated or if you allow grounds to get under the filter. Once you learn about each problem, with a bit of care you can prevent them from recurring. 2) You need to use a bit extra coffee to get the same strength of brew. This may be a tradeoff for getting such a fast brew. 3)Finally, the push button controls are hard to use. The labels are hard to read and the sequence of button presses to accomplish basic tasks (like setting the clock after a power interuption) are unnecessarily user-hostile.
Overall: Useful, attractive, functional, a good value ...

4.0 out of 5 stars I Like This Coffeemaker, September 5, 2002
This review is from: Melitta MEFB2W 12-Cup Digital Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
The Melitta MEFB2W 12-Cup Digital Coffeemaker is a great value at 39.95. I have spent more for a coffeemaker only to find the workmanship to be less. Melitta is well made, holds up in everyday use and provides a cup of coffee at the temperature I prefer. The carafe is made of thicker glass, pours perfectly and stands up to the occasional bump unlike say Krups, which it extremely thin and I seemed to break regularly. I recommend the Melitta MEFB2W, it is simple to use, makes a good cup of coffee and in my opinion made to last.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worse coffee maker ever owned!, January 19, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Melitta MEFB2W 12-Cup Digital Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
We have always owned lower priced units and decided it was time to treat ourselves to something nicer. We bought this one based on the name and brand reputation. This is the worst coffee maker we have ever owned. Our last one was a $$$ Mister Coffer and other than not being hot enough it was far superior to the Melitta.

We have owned it for about three weeks now and it has gotten stopped up and over flowed at least six times. I called the manufacturer and they sent me another filter basket. I used the new one this morning and it did the same thing!

I plan to call them again and find out what my options are as to getting a different model. Also, it is hard to replace the carafe after you pour your coffee. It is a very attractive unit, but function seems to have been comprimised in order to make it good looking.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good coffeemaker with one fatal design flaw, March 12, 2006
This review is from: Melitta MEFB2W 12-Cup Digital Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
We've enjoyed this coffeemaker for about two years now. Even bought a new carafe when the old one broke. Today, however, I decided it's time to retire this finicky friend, after a major overflow. If you buy this coffeemaker, be prepared to pay very close attention to how you place the carafe on the warmer, or you will suffer frequent overflows like many other reviewers have. When you place the carafe on the warmer, a knob on the lid pushes upwards on a spring loaded plunger at the bottom of the filter basket, opening the valve which allows liquid to flow into the carafe. The purpose of this plunger-valve is so that you can remove the carafe before brewing is finished and pour a cup of coffee if you're in a hurry. However, if the carafe is not perfectly centered on the warmer plate, the valve will only partially open, and the contents of the filter basket will overflow onto the kitchen counter and floor, and it takes some time to clean up the machine after this happens.

Well, you'd have to be stupid to not be able to center the carafe on the warmer, right? Perhaps. But, as a surgeon, I tend to be very attentive to details, and I've suffered, on average, one overflow every two months since we've had this thing. No more overflows for me. After we finish up our current box of filters, this finicky friend of ours will finally be laid to rest.

1.0 out of 5 stars Want a Recall!, August 30, 2004
This review is from: Melitta MEFB2W 12-Cup Digital Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
We purchased Melitta coffeemaker (MEFB2) because of fast brew feature in June, 2003. However in August, 2004, it shorted out and burned at one of the connections of the circuit board and blackened some of the plastic. Sparks flew without tripping the circuit breaker. The sneak-a-cup feature worked only intermittenly throughout ownership.

More trouble with this one than it is worth. This morning it blew the safety fuses for the second time. I'm not going to chance a third. I will NEVER buy another Melitta product. They have a website, but no way to interact. No way for a customer to receive satisfaction.

I have owned mine for almost a year and I love it! I use it everyday and I have never had a problem with it. For the price it's a great deal and if you tend to sleep late and forget to set the timer you can have a quick cup before you have to leave. I was using the same brand cone filters but I have found the store brands work just as well. Good pot for the money and makes a great cup of coffee.

2.0 out of 5 stars Did not last, October 16, 2004
This review is from: Melitta MEFB2W 12-Cup Digital Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
I never used the coffee make to stop and get a cup, but I had problems with the feature early on. I would set the time and the spring would get stuck while the maker was brewing. This would cause the filter chamber to fill up and overflow leaving a big mess to clean up. I finally dismantled that option. I just got done throwing the unit out after it quit from two years of medium service. I had a Bunn coffee maker previously and did not want to shell out the money. The Bunn had lasted me over 10 years. Needless to say, I went back to Bunn and bought the thermal version from Target. I have only had it for a week, but I am thrilled so far.

3.0 out of 5 stars This coffeemaker does the job......., May 20, 2003
This review is from: Melitta MEFB2W 12-Cup Digital Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
While this coffeemaker is not perfect, it does do the job. I like the carafe design...very little if any spilling. I like the speed at which the pot of coffee is brewed and the temperature it's held at. I do not like that I need to be extra cautious as to how much water I put in or the basket will overflow putting grinds in my coffee. Solution? Fill the carafe to 12 cups or UNDER and you should be ok. I find the Melitta brand filters work better than offbrand. Also, I don't like that the grinds splash up on the brewing "lid" and when you lift it to put water in the grinds may go into the water reservoir.
