5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a great "one-cup" coffee maker!!!
This thing is really nice...makes a great cup of coffee. I love the coffee pods (very easy cleanup). You can choose from 5 pod flavors (Dark Roast,Light Roast,Decaf,Hazelnut & French Vanilla). As you can see from the previous reviews, some folks just can't be satisfied ("it's too strong" or "too weak"). To the person that says it's too weak - try...

3.0 out of 5 stars Coffee or Tea or ... a 'Brain Podifier'?
The red is a VERY pretty red, and the black is handsome. The shape and design are also very attractive, although it looks more plastic up close than in the pictures. My son describes this as various outer space cartoon devices, sometimes calling it a "brain podifier." ;-)

I had a lot of trouble getting the javapods for this coffee maker. The web site they list...

4.0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised and worth trying., December 9, 2003
By
commswiz (Virginia, USA) - See all my reviews
**I've updated my review to include comments in response to various issues raised by other reviews. I've also included additional comments at the bottom.

I decided to try this coffee maker at work, as an option to going out for coffee, and have been quite pleased overall. It works as advertised. It's easy to use and brews a decent, very hot cup of coffee. The java pods are relatively inexpensive, are easy to handle, and produce consistent results. The strongest java pod coffee isn't quite as bold and strong as some of the gourmet shop dark roasts, but it's good overall.

Pros:
- Less preparation and clean up than a traditional coffee maker.
- Relatively inexpensive on a per cup basis, compared to a gourmet coffee shop.
- Good, very consistent coffee overall.
- Makes it easy to try different flavored coffees at the office.

Cons:
- If you don't insert the java pod properly, coffee can dribble out of the java pod chamber when brewing. This happens to me from time to time. It always dribbles down the front and is caught by the drip pan. I now press the java pod firmly into the holder and make sure that the crimped edges of the filter do not stick out much. (There is a flyer insert in the instructions that emphasizes the importance of inserting the java pod properly.)
- If you try to fill a large travel mug, or any very tall mug, you will have to hold it at an angle under the coffee spout during brewing. With a standard coffee mug, you can just let it sit on the drip pan as the coffee is dispensed.
- The machine can be noisy as it brews, as it contains a pump that forces water through the java-pod. The loudest sound it makes when brewing is the pump, which sounds a bit like an aquarium pump.
- Since the amount and type of ground coffee is fixed (sealed in a java pod), it's not possible to make adjustments in the coffee to suit your individual taste.
- There is only one flavor of decaffeinated coffee.

Does it boil water in the plastic water reservoir?
As far as I can tell, no. Yes, water is brought to a high temperature inside the machine, but the cloudy plastic reservoir does not get warm.

Can you use a java-pod more than once?
I tried this several times out of curiosity - brewing the "European" 5-ounce portion each time - and have been disappointed with the second cup. As you might expect, it's quite weak. And the manual doesn't recommend using a java-pod more than once. So, even if you only brew a 5-ounce cup, it's best use a fresh java-pod each time.

How complicated is the priming process?
This is one feature I had reservations about, especially since I wanted to use this product in the office, and didn't like the idea of running several cups of water through it just to prime it. If you're concerned about having water sit in the unit after several days of non-use, you can prime it. But you can run a partial reservoir through it by turning it off (via the power button) as it's running water through the system. You're not forced to run an entire reservoir of water through it each time you need to prime it.

Is the Melitta subscription service worthwhile?
The prices are very competitive at $5.00 per 18-pod box of coffee. However, shipping is about $6 per order, if the order total is under $100. I received no special offers or discounts during the several months I received automatic shipments.
I found their website to be a bit awkward to use, and had trouble maintaining my subscription account online. However, they were very helpful when I called their customer service number.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick,easy,and makes a good cuppa Joe, January 4, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This little thing is great. It is a huge hit at our house, because we can all fix the kind of coffee we want, not just what's in the big coffee pot, which we don't use anymore at all.De-caf;extra-caf,etc.I bought 4 boxes of different -flavored pods, and every one of them is great. It takes only a minute or so to brew an 8-oz cup of excellent-tasting coffee. We should have gotten one of these years ago! Plus..it's cute! And has a small footprint. It is extremely easy to use,and no messy grounds to contend with..just brew your cup,and toss the pod away when you are finished with it.
We are very pleased with this coffee maker at our house!

4.0 out of 5 stars HOPING TO CLEAR UP SOME OF THE CONFUSION, February 1, 2004
By A Customer
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I've seldom seen a product with such rabid fans, or such bitter enemies. I rely on customer reviews to help guide my purchases, but the mixed bag on this one really threw me off. That said, I went ahead and purchased the machine. I hope that I can in some small way help the next person who's considering this purchase.

PROS
1) Reasonable price
2) Reasonably priced Java Pods
3) Attractive styling, small footprint on counter
4) Easy to operate and clean
5) Makes a perfectly good cup of coffee

CONS
1)Makes small cups of coffee - as an earlier reviewer points out, you can run it once on the 8 oz. cup and once on the 5 oz. cup with the same pod, and get a decent-sized cup of coffee
2) Uses Melitta's Java Pods only (I don't think this is that big of a deal, but some people apparently do, so I thought I'd point it out again)

Comments on a couple of other reviewer's comments:

1)I haven't experienced the burnt plastic taste some people mention
2)It doesn't taste like instant to me
3)It may not be quite as good as "coffee house" coffee, but it's not as expensive
4)The pods are not that hard to get in the machine right, so I'm not sure what all that fuss is about

It's a fine machine for the price, and if you're not an over-the-top coffee aficionado. If you are, you should be spending more than $50 for your coffeemaker anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes a Good Cup of Coffee, December 14, 2003
By A Customer
If you are in need of a cup of coffee and don't want or need to brew a pot this pump driven machine will make a decent cup. Ok, if you are a coffee fanatic and need fresh beans ground within 10 minutes of brewing you will probably not like this machine. However, for those not as demanding this will work fine.

A tip on Pod insertion: If you follow the instructions you may find the machine leaks a little while brewing a cup. I found if I gently press the perimeter of the the pod into the holder making sure that the paper tabs are completely within the holder and not laying on the metal rim, the unit will seal correctly and not leak during the brew.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Coffeemaker (figured out how to avoid leaks), January 3, 2004
By
I really like this coffeemaker. It is easy to use and makes great coffee. As others have noted it is probably not as good as the best boutique coffee but it is a lot better than my old Mr. Coffee coffee and better than restaurant coffee.

It is very easy to use and keep clean. I had read about others having trouble with leaks. Therefore I was determined to be careful loading the pods and avoid that. Well, I had leaks too. I thought I was following directions when I was just setting the pod in the strainer leaving that nice paper rim on the pod sitting on the rim of the strainer. It would leak down the front then. One time I just decided to shove the pod all the way into the strainer and hey! the leaks were gone. That was the not-so-secret secret. Make sure you shove the pod all the way down in the strainer leaving no paper on the rim of the strainer. I've never had another leak.

The coffee is a little expensive. 25 cents or so a cup. That is not so bad, only I drink more coffee now than I used to because it is so easy to make and enjoyable to drink.

4.0 out of 5 stars Luv Coffee Maker! Hate Melitta Coffee Pods!, October 8, 2004
Bought the machine after reading all the reviews... I have to agree it is a great machine. Very easy to use and quick! The melitta coffee is horrible... I tried very hard to like it but broke down and tried the Home Cafe Millstone pods... They are great... Maybe everyone has different taste in coffee... the melitta brand was entirely to bitter for my taste... I tried the Hazelnut one, the vanilla one, and Buzzworthy... I ended up throwing out the coffee at work. Now that I've tried the other companies pods the one:one is a keeper :-)

My advice: try the samples that come with the machine and then decide if you like the melitta brands... If not.... rest assured the other companies pods will work... You will just have to squish them to fit :-) But they work :-)

This review is from: Melitta MES1R OneOne Single Serve Coffeemaker, Red (Kitchen)
I agree with other reviewers that the Melitta coffee pods are sub par, However, I have found a web site <podhead.com> that makes melitta style pods with superior coffee. There are various blends available. I have chosen to go with the Italian Roast which is excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Thing to hit the Coffee Market, January 9, 2004
By A Customer
This machine is great. I like decaf, wife likes french vanilla so we can both brew what we want. no more dumping wasted coffee. no grinds to mess with and no filter to buy. coffee is comparable to the Gevalia coffee which we used to buy. aroma is great, coffee is HOT! Only dislike is that I can't get my travel mug under the spout...not a big deal. cool thing we found is that you can leave a coffee pod out and fill a cup with hot water for the kids to stir in hot chocolate! we bought 4 for friends and family at christmas time and they love the machine too! Coffee is cheap if you compare to other high end coffee's, plus you're not wasting coffee that doesn't get drank.

THIS JUST IN!! They now have TEA PODS (black, green and raspberry)!! You have to call the 800 # to get them though and the tea is awesome!! Raspberry taste too much like coolade...not a good thing. I just had it this week and had to share the great news with every one. Little secret, little liptons tea bags fit in there too...not as good as the One:One tea though.

5.0 out of 5 stars No accounting for user error... or personal taste., January 1, 2004
By
Bad Bart (Montgomery County, Pennsylvania) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Melitta MES1R OneOne Single Serve Coffeemaker, Red (Kitchen)
I got one of these for Christmas- I love it. It makes the PERFECT 10oz. cup of coffee everytime. The pods are awesome (if not a little pricey- which I am sure will change if this thing catches on and does well) and the clean-up couldn't be any easier.

I wanted to post this VERY POSITIVE review because most of the negative reviews I've read are rooted in one of two things- either user error (the person didn't set the pods properly, etc.) or coffee snobbery. This isn't an espresso machine. If you want a latte or a really strong cup of coffee, then buy an espresso machine or keep paying $3 a cup at Starbucks.

However, if you are an average Joe who likes that one cup of coffee when you just don't want to brew a whole pot- or you hate making coffee at home because you just never get the coffee-to-water ratio right- then this is definitely for you.

I even found two pods I really like and will probably be joining Melitta's online pod club- where pods are sent monthly to you at home. EVEN if I don't join, getting the pods will be easy: TARGET carries the One-to-One AND all the pods.

Three cheers to the best home appliance invented since the microwave.
