Does it get any better?..., October 4, 2006
Whoever selected this inspired combination of Miles Davis' tracks spanning over 30 years of playing deserves huge praise because it fits, it works, and it just flows. It is in fact nothing more or less than the title suggests but, because it features one of the world's greatest musicians, it all adds up to one of the most beautiful jazz CD's ever released... brilliant and totally undiscovered it's an absolute "must" for anyone who wants to know how good mellow jazz can get.

Quality music from Miles the all-time great, and easy on the ear too, October 23, 2010
This superb and much-played (by me) CD is exactly what its title says: "A collection of classic tracks from the softer side of Miles Davis". It's 100% instrumental, with Miles' expressive trumpet playing actually taking over the nominal vocal line in many numbers and so incidentally demonstrating his virtuosity through a wide range of moods and styles.
Miles admitted later in life that he had "always loved playing ballads" but rarely allowed himself the luxury of doing so onstage, where he constantly pushed the envelope of experimental jazz to new levels. "Mellow Miles" showcases many of his more melodious numbers taken from "Kind of Blue" plus several excellent covers including: "Bye Bye Blackbird," Gershwin's "Summertime" taken from the "Porgy and Bess" collaboration with Gil Evans, and Porcaro & Bettis' "Human Nature" which many people associate with Michael Jackson.
This collection is a perfect introduction to Miles Davis' great trumpet playing and can be listened to anywhere, anytime with a keen ear, or alternately used as high-quality background music where its melodious ambient sound will not be too intrusive. If you have it in your collection, it's the kind of album you will play again and again, and then again, for years and years. In fact, it's outright brilliant.
Even if you think you don't like jazz, give it a listen: you may like it, and be tempted to move on to the more innovative and demanding stuff (if so, try "In a Silent Way" next).

Miles for those who can't take the heat, October 16, 2002
Oh dear. I wonder who would buy this? Miles Davis, the greatest experimenter in jazz history, is shown here as a person who is a bit of a sell out; someone who makes jazz tailored for the smooth jazz market. But the act is that was simply not true. With this disc you don't get the whole story! And worse still, I don't think people are going to make a "Harsh Miles" to complement this one. Sure you get some of his best work, but this only focusses on his first quintet/sextet and his later fusion outings. Where is stuff "In A Silent Way" and some of his second quintet's outings??????
Stay clear away from this unless you are a cowardly smooth jazz fan.
