5.0 out of 5 stars Water flow control really makes a difference...
I had bought the 4100 model (which doesn't have adjustable water flow control) from Home Depot. It was a great sprinkler but I couldn't get it to work in the small areas of my yard even with turning off the three sprinklers on each side.

I was skeptical that the 4200 model with water flow control would make that much of a difference, because I figured I...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the trouble!
I bought the unit because it was suppose to be adjustable to the size you wanted to water. You can adjust the three outside holes to squirt or not in order to narrow the watering area. You can adjust the amount of water pressure to shorten the distance and, you can adjust the amount of oscillation to control the range of the watering. The problem is, these things only...

The problem is, these things only work as long as the unit oscillates. If you cut down on the water flow it stops oscillating. Of course, it always waits until you get back inside the house before it stops so when you look and it's not oscillating, you don't know how long it has been stopped. On occasion, it even stops oscillating with a full flow of water so you really have to keep an eye on it. Not worth the trouble.

Ray "Red Devil" hit the nail right on the head. This sprinkler stalls all the time, but for me it didn't matter what I set the flow rate at. It quits oscillating at full throttle and my water pressure is not low. I have two and they behave the same.

I like the concept. It's wonderfully easy to adjust compared to the traditional oscillating sprinklers, but this product is engineered badly. One has to wonder if they ever do any design verification testing on their products. They certainly couldn't have done much on this piece of junk.

I was skeptical that the 4200 model with water flow control would make that much of a difference, because I figured I could simply control flow at the faucet. Thankfully I was wrong! I turn up the water pressure at the faucet, turn down the water flow at the sprinkler and it works beautifully in even the smallest areas. Continues to oscillate just fine even when doing a small 4'X 6' patch of grass.

1.0 out of 5 stars Oscillating is unreliable therefor unit is usless, July 7, 2010
This review is from: Melnor 4200 Turbo Oscillating Sprinkler With Flow Control (Lawn & Patio)
I bought this Melnor oscillating sprinkler together with the similar Melnor 360M 2 years ago and am now throwing both away as they both stop oscillating shortly after you set them up. It is very frustrating to start watering an area and then return to find that your sprinkler is stuck in one position and has failed at its intended job. I have 2 Gardena brand ocillating sprinklers (one is 12 years old) that work perfectly. Reliability counts so avoid these products.

1.0 out of 5 stars NO stars, June 18, 2009
This review is from: Melnor 4200 Turbo Oscillating Sprinkler With Flow Control (Lawn & Patio)
The second Melnor oscillating sprinkler I bought doesn't work any better than the first one. The sprinkler sticks (stops oscillating) at various times so you have to stay with it if you don't want a big puddle of water in one place. It may work for an hour or a few minutes but you never know how long before it sticks again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible product, May 11, 2009
This review is from: Melnor 4200 Turbo Oscillating Sprinkler With Flow Control (Lawn & Patio)
The sprinkler doesn't work as advertised. Even with a lot of water pressure the sprinkler stops osscilating; you basically have to stand around to 'help' it oscillate.

I would not buy this sprinkler again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Oscillating feature doesn't work, April 26, 2008
This review is from: Melnor 4200 Turbo Oscillating Sprinkler With Flow Control (Lawn & Patio)
This sprinkler stopped oscillating the second time I used it. Now I have a sprinkler that can only water one part of the lawn at a time. Not what I was looking for. When I looked online I found that this is a known problem with Melnor sprinklers. Buyer beware!

1.0 out of 5 stars Two different Melnor models, two failures -- won't buy this brand again, April 26, 2008

I purchased this sprinkler and was pleased at the ability to adjust the coverage of the spray. That aspect is quite nice, but unfortunately that does you no good if the thing stops oscillating. After a few weeks of perfect performance, it just stopped oscillating and stayed in one fixed position. I see from many other reviews here that I am not the only person who has had this problem. Since some people say their sprinklers work fine, I can only assume this is a case of very inconsistent workmanship in their manufacturing. They definitely need to do some quality control. I hadn't yet read these reviews when I went to buy a second Melnor sprinkler to replace the first -- I assumed it was some random malfunction with my item. I went with Melnor again, but a slightly different model number. SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN, and this time after just one day's use! At least this time the sprinkler is new enough that I still have the receipt and box. I will certainly be returning this and buying a sprinkler by another company (and telling everyone I know not to risk buying from Melnor). I give them credit for having a good idea in their design, but if they can't deliver consistent results do you really want to risk spending your money on their products? If you decide to buy this anyway, I recommend that you keep your receipts and the product packaging so that you can get your money back. If you're one of the people who doesn't get a malfunctioning sprinkler, lucky you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great at first!, May 6, 2011

I bought two of these. They were really great adjustable sprinklers when first turned on. I loved them at first. But after just ONE WINTER sitting in the garage. ALL the rubber tips had shrunk, and the distance the water goes was LESS THAN HALF AS FAR!!!

Seriously, this sprinkler Did cover an entire section of lawn the first year, but the second year, after rinsing it out, when the water pressure was high, and nothing else was on, it covered Less than half that same area.

So I guess the message is... AVOID SPRINKLERS THAT SPRAY THE WATER THROUGH RUBBER TIPS!!!

Oh yeah. And one of them quit oscillating, just like a lot of other people are saying!

1.0 out of 5 stars Tried two models and both failed, May 4, 2011

I had two different, but similar models of the plastic Melnor oscillating sprinklers. Both failed for the same reason after one season of use. The tabbed rings for setting the oscillation limits will not stay where set. They move to the extreme end of each range as the sprinkler oscillates. Mine also had minor problems with the nozzles not spraying evenly, even after I cleaned them.
