5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this album, get every remix they've ever done., September 10, 2002

This album goes past the distinction of being my favorite. It was until a new one came along, but this happens about once every two weeks or so. What makes it special is that it will stay in my collection, in easy reach, until the plastic bio-degrades. It's funny how many people compared this album to Air. Air bores me to sleep most times, but I have to admit, this album is somewhat similar. It goes beyond that, though.

I admired the the jazzy and somewhat loungy feel, along with the fabulous production values. Royksopp isn't afraid to add some dirty sounds, to round out the clean electronic vibe. The vocals are fabulous and even haunting.

My favorite song is Eple, which I heard on a couple of chillout comps that my roommate has. I just bought the single. This song always ends too soon, and if this album has any flaw, that is it.

Also of great note to me is "Remind Me". This songs vocals make you Feel Something. In fact, the whole album makes you Feel Something.

I recomend getting a hold of their remixes too. Frost - "Endless Love" and Kings of Convinience - "I Don't Know What I Can Save You From" (tho only the Royksopp remix versions)are sparkling jems that any Royksopp fan should have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful first album, December 23, 2001

This has to be my favourite album of the year and I've only just discovered it. There isn't a bad track on the album. It's along the lines of Air, Daft Punk, Lemon Jelly, and a little bit of Bjorkness thrown in for good measure. It's best described as chill-out dance, with a couple of tracks benefiting from some romantic vocals. There's even a Jarre sample in there; the production values are top notch.

I don't normally agree when magazines vote an album as their album of the month, but in this case Royksopp deserve those accolades. Most of the pieces are around 4 minutes long except "Royksopp's night out" which is as grand as a Propellerheads James Bond style track and twice as funky. If you're into the Wall of Sound or Warp record labels, this album is unquestionably for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Chill-out Delight!, September 30, 2002
This review is from: Melody Am (Audio CD)
I bought this album a while back without hearing any of the songs on it, but basically trusting the raves of others and not to my surprise it has been one of the best dance CD's that I have ever bought (and I have many!). The sheer brillience of the tracks and their distintc and highly original substance provides for a great chill-out album that I would recommend to anyone who likes their dance music down tempo and easy on the ears. The melodies of some of the songs, especially "Remind Me," "Poor Leno" and "So Easy" are so catchy that you'll find yourself humming along, but never to the point where they're stuck in your head to your annoyance. In my opinion this is a brilliant breakthrough CD superior to the likes of Zero 7, Faithless, and Afterlife. Definately one of the best albums of 2001 and soon to be 2002 stateside.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply stunning, October 7, 2002
By
This review is from: Melody Am (Audio CD)
This album is like moby's play but without the gospel choirs. This is one of the best chill-out albums around. Most of the instruments used by Royksopp you will have heard before but somehow all the songs on here sound truly unique. The best track on here is Higher Place, a stunning track with guitars, and laid back beats (where is this higher place, I want to go there!!!). Royksopp's night out sounds like something from a 60s movie. In space is about as chilled out as you can get with its warm synth and relaxing harp. So easy is a wierd track which keeps moving away from the 'aahing' which people in the UK will have heard on a particular TV commercial. 40 years back/come is a track which I love but I still don't know to make of the atmosphere. Remind me is a laid back song sung the brilliant Erland Oye (Buy the remixes). Sparks is another stunningly warm sounding track. Does the vocalist on this track sing for Telepopmusik? Poor Leno is a cool piece of house also sung by Erland Oye, you can either dance to it or chill to it.
If you like the sound of this don't waste time downloading it off the net, buy it right now cos you won't regret it. This has to be the best dance album of the year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliance!, August 2, 2002

I'm somewhat bummed...this album STILL is not available state-side. This is ridiculous, mainly because I know PLENTY of individuals who would be absolutely thrilled about this music on a stylistic level. I was one of the lucky few. I wound up receiving this album from a dear, dear friend who was studying in London and became the first person to discover Royksopp (well, that I knew of anyway).

In comparison with other artists out there, the Royksopp sound is INCREDIBLY similar to the likes of Air and Lemonjelly. The interesting thing to note, is that even though Royksopp can be compared to contemporary downtempo artists, the Royksopp sound is extraordinarily unique. Torbjorn and Svein Berge (the genius combination behind Royksopp) fuse the right amount of musical depth in their composition, dipping into various genres, to attract a wide range of music appreciators.

As for stand out tracks, "So Easy" becomes a groovy introduction to the Royksopp sound, delicately embracing the listener with a delightful melody that becomes hard to deny, in terms of the stylistic brilliance contained within the captivatingly simple melody line. "Eple" is an incredibly catchy counterpart and has made its appearance in numerous chill out compliations. "Eple" combines the right amount of funk and chill to the point where the listener is taken away on a magnificent wall of sound, full of sweeps and swoons. "A Higher Place" is guaranteed to make the list of favorites on this album, mainly due to the structure behind the song's full flexing build. The deep texture and the flittering twitches of sound, are enough to carry the listener to another place...a higher place.

"Melody A.M." is a set of musical compositions ready for headphone investigation. Royksopp blends the lines of genre identification and dapples in various genres for a full, head-on effect.

Instructions for personal use: put the cd in your cd changer, press play, sit down, and enjoy the fabulous duo known as Royksopp! Repeat as often as necessary...

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure genious, November 18, 2001
By
This review is from: Melody Am (Audio CD)
The Norwegian electronica band Röyksopp came out of nowhere and blew most reviewers away with this album of pure genious. The fact that European MTV played their first single, "Eple", and are currently playing "Poor Leno" a LOT should prove my point. However, this is not to be mistaken with "mainstream-kids-music" MTV often air.

I'm having a tough time trying to come up with examples of similar artists and albums. Saint Etienne and The Sushi Club might be comparable, but Röyksopp is still pretty unique. Most of the songs on this album is pretty chill-out, I especially like the "chillness" of "Sparks" and "In Space". Some contains more funky beats, such as "So Easy", "Eple" and "Poor Leno", all of which are among my favorites. They are all truly excellent examples of the marvelous flow the songs on this album possess.

I could go on forever about how much I love this album, but that would just sound do cheesy. I suggest you give it a spin yourself, and I can almost garantee you that you'll like what you hear. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to listen to one of my all time favourite albums: Röyksopp - Melody A.M.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent debut that's a tickle to the ears, December 16, 2001
This review is from: Melody Am (Audio CD)
Norwegian mates Torbjorn and Svein Berge (Royksopp) have created an exhilarating debut, flat out. Every track shows a sure and confident approach, swathed in texture and ripe for headphone exploration.

There's a reason why "Eple" has been touted on scads of chillout compilations; it's downright huggable bleep-foolery which infallibly triggers a smile. Probably the catchiest tune on the lot, but matched several times in quality from others. "Sparks" plies a swooning vocal and strings over a low-slung crackling beat, a bittersweet love song. "In Space" makes you wonder why no one else has tried recording with harps and chimes recently. Throw in some lost 70's prog-guitar swirl, "She's So," and the set's complete.

Lowlights? Any errant choices stem from Erlend Oye on vocals for two tracks. "Poor Leno" bangs out a festive house beat that really aches for a dub mix.

Melody AM's a tickle to the ears at times, widescreen romantic at others. Low on breakout, memorable, singles but no matter. If this is just the beginning, Royksopp should be dazzling us for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Electronic and relaxation-surprising, May 27, 2003
By
will (Quimper(That's in France)) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Melody Am (Audio CD)
The first track I heard was Eple, which was used for a campaign advertising Tiscali(France). First, I thought it was the usual stupid advertising electronic music, but after a few times viewing the advert I started to fall in love with the music. The first tracks make the cd look promising (So Easy and Eple consecutively) , but don't worry, the rest is the same quality, especially "Röyksopp's Night Out" and "She's So".
Melody A.M is more likely to be listened to in the evening.
A real success in Europe, by the way.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wondeful relax music!, February 8, 2003
This review is from: Melody Am (Audio CD)
The Norwegian dance Duo Röyksopp are defenitely among the most interesting groups lately,we haven't heard very much dance music from norway before but this album is really remarkable. It's soft dance music, you can relax too, the songs are meliodic and wonderdul, a few with chorus and some instrumental. "Melody A.M" is thier debut album actually, they are that kind of group that will sell more albums then single's so if you like them go for the album cause it's good. "Poor Leno" is one of a few songs with lyrics, it's a slow, seductive and a beautiful sound aswell. Then we have the likes of "Remind me" and "Eple" which i think i've heard somewhere else, but never on single. "A higher place" is good too and "She's so", There are diffrent versions of this album i think, some includes a few remixes of the hit singles, however it's not a very big loss without them either. Some like Moby, but this is defenitely better and it's not only suited for dance music fans, go for it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime pop from Norway, September 16, 2002
By
Jim Radford (New York, New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Melody Am (Audio CD)
One of the best from 2001, even if it still has not been released here. Truly beautiful music--very warm and lush. Comparisons to Air are not unfounded, though Royksopp is a very different band. The vocals provided by Kings Of Convenience fit perfectly. Be sure to check out Royksopp's remixes of Kings Of Convenience and Mekon (featuring Marc Almond) as well. This CD jumps from jazz (Royksopp's Night Out) to fractured pop (Eple) to disco (Poor Leno) to downtempo [whatever that is...](Remind Me). Truly different--you'd be smart to get this!
