...I've always relied on the kindness of cheerleaders, because cheerleaders have more **fun**, October 31, 2008
This review is from: Melrose Place: Season 7, Vol. 1 (DVD)
Truthfully season 7 of MP isn't as good as the last few before it, but that's not uncommon for long running broadcast television, especially for nighttime soaps. There are some really great eps from season 7 and at times it even rivals season 6. But of course you have to chip away at all the dead grass; that being the ludicrous love-triangle between Amanda/Kyle/Peter, and then you have to turn a blind eye to every single one of Kyle's incredibly crazy (not to mention desperate, obscene, vulgar and blatantly sad) attention-seeking stunts to fully appreciate season 7.
For me, the reason why I enjoyed season 7 so much was because of Eve. She was such a multi-facated character. She was sweet, tough, sexy, innocent, witchy and a touch on the devilish side. But what I really liked about Eve was that she morphed into the Kimberly-crackpot that longtime MP fans have come to expect. Oh I also loved the entire victim aspect of Eve. She was the total thankless victim (all thanks to that "soul-less, husband-stealing, slu tty Amanda," as Kimberly described during a brief spell of lucidity during season 3).
I also really enjoyed Lexi. Because she was the total "B" who had the Balls to go up against Queen Woodward. I don't think anyone else in the entire history of MP annoyed Amanda as much (not even Taylor or Alison in her wilder days). And it wasn't so much that Lexi was this hugely brilliant person who knew all the right buttons to push and it wasn't because she was such a hot mama that chased all the men to her. Rather Amanda hated her so much because Lexi was a very dedicated rival who surpassed even Amanda as far as control and ruthlessness. I never had much respect or interest in Queen Woodward, but she turned into an even a bigger tragic train-wreck during season 7 and that was mostly due in part because of that fiery vixen, Lex.
In terms of the good characters I really enjoyed the 2 Mrs. Mancinis. Mrs. Mancini #1 & #5 and Mrs. Mancini #4, otherwise known as Jane and Megan. I liked Megan because she was the kind voice of reason who was also there to help her fellow neighbor. Although at times she was very naive, especially for an ex-West Hollywood hooker, but that's all good. And I liked Jane for 2 reasons. First of all, she was smart enough to take out the trash (Michael). And like Eve there was such a tragic and victimized part of Jane that I adored. I loved how she sat at the edge of her fireplace going over her divorce papers with a half-empty bottle of peachy Riuniti; she totally set the stage for that big blockhead, Kyle. And then when Amanda (in all of her dementia) fired poor Jane that was just big bulbous nuts on top of the sundae!
These are the season 7 actors / characters:
* Jamie Luner / Lexi Sterling
* Rena Sofer / Eve Cleary (later known as Eve Burns)
* Josie Bissett / Jane Mancini
* Kelly Rutherford / Megan Lewis (known as Megan McBride by the final ep)
* Dey Young / Dr. Irene Shulman
* Jack Wagner / Dr. Peter Burns
* John Newton / Ryan McBride
* Rob Estes / Kyle (the Jake-wannabe) McBride
* Heather Locklear / Amanda "Queen of the Jungle" Woodward
These are all the season 7 MP eps:
The World According to Matt 9/14/1998
The gang all meet at Kyle's for a reunion with old friend, Matt Fielding. Everyone is shocked to find out that Matt tragically parishes in an accident. Everyone is also riled up when they hear of a secret diary that Matt has kept.
Note: even though the ep that aired b4 this one (Buona Sera, Mr. Campbell) aired just a week prior, that one was part of season 6. All the eps that aired in the summer of '98, prior to "The World According to Matt" were all hold-over eps that are season 6.
Where the Hookers Grow 9/21/1998
Lex goes after a doctor at the hospital to get info on Peter. Megan goes home and Michael chases after her.
Dr. Jealousy 9/28/1998
Lexi starts taunting Peter. She even has the nerve to call him up, while laying down in a bubble-bath, just to make him nervous. Then she sets up a meeting to tell Amanda but backs off at the last minute. Meanwhile, Megan takes a job with Lex' new advertising firm, in direct competition with "you-know-who."
Not Quite All About Eve 10/19/1998
Eve is hit by a car, and after firing her, Kyle feels bad and gives her another chance.
The Rumor Whisperer 10/26/1998
Thanks to Lexi, malicious gossip is spread about Amanda. I really think this is the ep when I started totally hating Amanda because she turned into such a hypocrite. Yeah, like she never fell on her back to further her career. And I love how Lexi says to the judge (whom she had the brief fling with) "I know how tongues like to wag in this town."
The Night the Lights Went Out at Melrose 11/2/1998
There's trouble in paradise when a blackout plagues the apartment building.
Suspicion 11/9/1998
As usual, Kyle can't leave well enough alone and sticks his nose into Eve's affairs.
Fiddling on the Roof 11/16/1998
Michael and Jane's wedding is dead on arrival. But get a load of Lexi and Ryan in the bathroom. They were going at it, like jackrabbits.
Lethal Wedding 4 11/23/1998
Jane runs to court to sue Michael for a divorce.
When Cheerleaders Attack 11/30/1998
Kyle finds out the secret of Eve (and Amanda). Peter and Eve get married and Kyle agrees to keep it a secret. Of course Lexi shows her um..face, when she pops up in Peter's hotel room, stark naked!
Suddenly Sperm 12/14/1998
Kyle is incorrectly told that he cannot father children.
The Usual Santas 12/21/1998
In a Christmas ep, the guys are arrested (dressed as Santa) when the geniuses at the LAPD think that they held up a bank. Later on, Kyle visits a Christmas tree salesman who knows about Eve's past and beats him to a bloody pulp. Ho, ho, ho!
The Kyle High Club 1/11/1999
Kyle gets more and more crazy. Meanwhile, Jane and Michael make a brief reconciliation.
I Married a Jock Murderer 1/18/1999
With Eve's help, Ryan ties to get Amanda and Kyle on speaking terms again. And dumbbell Michael finally gets what's coming to him, in the form of a sneaky con-man who dupes him out of thousands of dollars.
A Fist Full of Secrets 1/25/1999
OMG this is probably my very favorite ep of season 7. Peter goes back to Oakhurst and confronts the Dumar family. I love how he calls their son a rapist and tells the cop that "I give you my word if you arrest my wife by this time tomorrow someone else will be wearing that badge." This rivals even the chivalry of Jake!!
The Younger Son Also Rises 2/8/1999
Amanda's father-in-law comes for a visit and sarcastically tells his son that Amanda may have a baby, but he'll have sandy blonde hair (just like Dr. Burns!)
Saving Ryan's Privates 2/15/1999
Kyle is totally out of the stratosphere and such a raving kook in this ep. What I don't understand is why is it when Kimberly acted like a nut she was institutionalized but when Kyle does it everyone thinks it's cute?
They Shoot Blanks, Don't They? 2/22/1999
Another ep devoted to Kyle's dementia. This is getting old (and tired).
How Amanda Got Her Groove Back 3/1/1999
Peter charters a medi-vac for Amanda and she flies onto the tarmac to win Kyle back, as he's about to take a flight to Boston, to leave for good. (Dare I say, she should've let him go?)
Unpleasantville 3/8/1999
Lexi sticks her nose into Megan's affairs as far is Ryan is concerned because she wants to see if he really is afraid of a commitment.
Ryan's Choice 4/5/1999
Ryan travels back to New York to see his secret, estranged daughter.
McBride's Head Revisited 4/12/1999
Lex buys you-know-who's apartment building. Amanda makes some grand statement, "I'm leaving now." Um, shouldn't you have been packed before you closed on your home?? I love how Lexi says to her, "good it'll save me the trouble of evicting you." Hahahaha!!!
The Daughterboy 4/19/1999
After Michael and Peter set the 2 up, Shulman stops interfering in hospital business...at least for the time being!
Bitter Homes and Guardians 4/26/1999
Kyle and Amanda make a clean and smooth break. The marriage is over, he sells his half of the club and he gets closer to Jane.
Floral Knowledge 5/3/1999
Amanda shoots a cruise ship commercial, staring Eve.
Lexi Gets Stiffed 5/10/1999
Lexi sabotages Amanda's film from the commercial and causes her to lose the account. I love it!!
Dead Men Don't Shut Up 5/17/1999
Lex befriends Eve in the hopes that it'll trigger a repressed memory so she can get even more dirt on Amanda.
A sses to Ashes 5/24/1999
After finding out that Peter is leaving her for Amanda, Eve goes off the deep end and retrogresses into a complete and total kook! I love it!! She ties up both Lexi and Michael (in his tighty whities) and sticks them in a tub together. Meanwhile, she tries to run Peter over. But Peter has his own problems when Shulman resurfaces, this time with concrete evidence to bring him down. Both Peter and Amanda decide to fake their deaths. I love how at the funeral Eve shows up (dressed like a cheerleader, of course!) and throws Peter's ashes all over Lex saying, "you always wanted Peter to be all over you." Peter and Amanda have an island wedding and then walk together on some secluded beach, discussing what they'll name their children. "A Billy and a Sydney," Peter says. "Just not a Kimberly," Amanda said in perhaps her only wise remarks of the entire season.
