4.0 out of 5 stars Suprisingly Engaging
This was one of a bunch of CD's that got lost in the alterno-shuffle of the mid-90's. Bands put out albums at such a rate that it was easy to miss good ones. This album is quite engaging - think of Garbage but generally poppier. The songwriting is never less than interesting, and the music and singing are very enjoyable. 3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but Howe and Reny have done better.
Artificial Joy Club is a reincarnation of the Ottawa pop duo One 2 One, which was one of those extremely talented acts that never quite made it to the major leagues. But guitarist Leslie Howe is a multi-instrumental virtuoso of sorts with a great ear for arrangement, and partner Louise Reny has a great voice with a flair for vibrato that predated Gwen Stefani's...

Highlights include the single "Sick & Beautiful" (with its strange list of metaphors for a love [?] affair), "Psychic Man" and "No Shame" (great couplet:"I like to dream about the Beatles/I also ponder issues like Pete Best"). Highly recommended to pop/rock and alternofans.

5.0 out of 5 stars still waiting, May 27, 2004

Every year I make a point of digging around to see if this team of musicians has made any noise.... still nothing. This album is truly one of those great treasures, long overlooked, but loved dearly by those that have discovered it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique Talent, December 21, 2002

Artificial Joy Club is possibly the most talented group I've ever heard. No one can fully appreciate or even begin to grasp some of the stuff reached in their songs unless they listen to the cd at least 10 times. I'm a fan of good lyrics over good music. Both are supplied, but the lyrics aren't just good, they're incredible. They're supported with strong music, but not so as to distract you from the words. The only thing Artificial Joy Club is missing is another album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great CD, especially for free!, March 20, 1999

My friend, who's aunt is recording artist Jonatha Brooke, brought a bunch of CDs after going to LA to see her. He let everyone in school pick a CD, and as I was rummaging through, I noticed this one. I had never heard of them, but I decided to give them a try. Damn, was that a smart move! This is a great CD, not the best I've heard, but incredibly well written and entertaining! I recommend that you go to your local store and buy it, or buy it here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Entertaining., March 28, 1999

Clearly, this band has a lot of fun making music. "Sick & Beatiful" originally burst on to the airwaves as if it was shot out of a gun. People were always on the radio asking for "that song...you know...where that gal is going all out..I don't know the name...uhh...but you've GOT to play it." It is a shame that AJC club hasn't been able to really capitalize on this good start. Most people who actually buy the album thoroughly enjoyed it. "I Say" and "You're Too Good to Me" are cut from the same cloth as "Sick & Beautiful". Melt comes in handy at times, such as when you really need to break up the boredom of a long road trip through multiple states that look exactly the same. It wouldn't hurt if they would come out with another album. Soon. Most people who bought Melt would probably be inclined to buy the follow-up.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Blend, February 13, 1999
This review is from: Melt (Audio CD)
AJC's brilliant mix of rock, pop, and keyboarding, accompanied by clever rhythms and often humorous lyrics creates an album full of songs that'll stick in your head like glue. Originally, I had the cassette, which I unfortunately lost. Only after a year was I able to find the CD, and STILL all the songs were stuck in my head. A+ rock.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Pop-Rock CD Ever!, February 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Melt (Audio CD)
Wow I picked up this CD after hearing the last half of Sick And Beutiful and boy was I amased. I was expecting a one hit wonder band, but was blown away by the creative energy of such songs as Psychic Man and the awe inspiring Spaceman, it's just too bad the band doesn't get the recognition they deserve for such a great CD

5.0 out of 5 stars Different, Wonderful, and full of Passion, October 3, 2000
This review is from: Melt (Audio CD)
I have listened to the CD a least 25 times and seen them live and I must say, this group is fantastic. They are entertaining as well as hip, humorous, and have a wonderful sound. Many of their songs I believe the new generation can relate to and to us old people (in our 30's)as well. I truly believe that it is hard to find a CD these days that has more than one song on it that is any good. This one has many! 5 stars!
