As someone who has had good success taking Allegra in the past, this generic equivalent does not come close to the effectiveness of the name brand. My doctor used to give me free samples of Allegra before it went over the counter. Quite simply, the name brand worked and this generic equivalent didn't.

I am in my 4th year of medical school and I am a believer in generic medications overall, but there is a large degree of truth to the fact that generics don't always work as well as the drug they are mimicking. In order to be sold in the United States, they are allowed to be anywhere between 80%-120% as effective as the brand name drug. So even if the "generic equivalent" is only 80% as good as the brand name drug, it will still be allowed on the market. This version of Fexofenadine is of the 80% variety, and that is being generous.

If you are on a tight budget and can't afford brand name Allegra, I would try Cetirizine, which is generic for Zyrtec. Cetirizine is cheaper than Fexofenadine regardless of who is selling it. However, I would strongly recommend a generic brand like Kirkland or a store brand (Rite Aid, CVS, Walgreens, Meijer, etc.), in place of Member's Mark's generic Cetirizine. If Member's Mark's generic Cetirizine is anything like its generic Fexofenadine, it just doesn't live up to its billing. I'd say it was barely better than placebo.

I am very pleased that fexofenadine (Allegra) finally went over-the-counter in the United States. It's main advantages are that it is completely non-drowsy, very safe, very potent (the second most-potent antihistamine on the market), and long-lasting (almost 24 hours. As of the fall of 2011, a daily dose of fexofenadine costs about or a little less than $0.30. This is more than loratadine (Claritin) or cetirizine (Zyrtec), but the cost-benefit is enormous to the user. I recommend fexofenadine to anyone who has more than just the very mildest allergy. The particular packaging this review is written about is the cheapest fexofenadine I could find online.

Comparison with loratadine (Claritin):
Both clinical experience and research are clear that loratadine is barely more effective than placebo. Loratadine is a very weak drug that helps only the weakest allergy. Supposedly, it lasts 24 hours. It is very safe. Also, loratadine is completely non-drowsy. In comparison, fexofenadine is immensely more powerful and helps even moderate, moderate-severe, and severe allergies. Fexofenadine lasts about the same amount of time (180mg will hold for nearly 24 hours), and it is similarly quite safe. Unless the allergy is very mild, fexofenadine is clearly the drug of choice. Personally, loratadine is like candy for me and does not at all affect my allergies, whereas fexofenadine works.

Comparison with cetirizine (Zyrtec):
The manufacturers of cetirizine continue to claim that it is non-drowsy, but this is false. Both clinical experience and research are clear that cetirizine impairs alertness, mental speed, and decision-making. On the up-side, cetirizine lasts about 24 hours, and it is clearly the strongest antihistamine on the market.

I have taken Allegra 180mg everyday for nearly 10 years. I've paid an unbelievable amount of money for a monthly prescription, changed to a quarterly prescription and then rejoiced over the generic version as the price dramatically dropped.
There is no way this product is 180mg. The pill is round and about 2/3 the size of Allegra as well as CVS brand fexofenadine 180. 180mg is supposed to last for 24 hrs. This product does NOT. I have to take one in the morning and one at night to keep the allergies at bay. Don't waste your money on this product.

I thought I'd try these, but I'm def. getting breakthrough after about 11 hrs. This generic might be good for some folks, but I have a bad soy allergy and really need the high dose to work well. Sending them back.

I have been using this version of Allegra for about 6 months now and it was the best thing I ever did. I used to use Alavert but my body eventually became used to it. The other allergy medicines didn't cut it for me, and Benadryl causes me to fall asleep, so that was out. When I found out about this from a friend, I bought a trial size version and it was the best thing I ever did. To clarify, I have asthma that is severely effects by pollen and usually am on 2 different medicines to help control it. Taking this has my asthma completely under control! Also, I get the normal allergy symptoms -- feeling groggy, foggy, runny nose, congestion, watering/itchy eyes, etc. This pretty much works in about 15-20 minutes after taking it and I feel 20x better. I don't know why people say so many bad things about generics. They have always worked for me as long as I have taken them and they have saved me SO much money.

I have been prescribed these for allergic rhinitis which we have in our family for as long as I can remember...it's wonderful to be able to buy them in quantity like this...I'd be paying for them, card by card, over here where prescription charges are very high...I am so grateful to the sellers for their postage of this to me and can't rate them and the product highly enough. I find it most effective all year round and wouldn't want to be without it...after all people will insist on wearing their favourite perfume etc. etc...and never think that someone might be allergic to it, or their aftershave or their foundation...
