Book Description

A haunting, original eStory from Jennifer Weiner.

When Eleanor Goode meets Gerald King, she's a senior at Wellesley who's won all the writing prizes. He's just published his first novel, Dirty Blond, and is well on his way to becoming one of the literary lions of his day. Gerry seduces Ellie, spinning her a fantasy of working with him, two writers, side by side. How could she have known that, in their years together, it would be one typewriter, not two; his words, not hers? How she would become the fetcher of coffee, the holder of trinkets fans would press into his hands after readings, the keeper of his legacy.

A Memoir of Grief (Continued) begins with Gerald’s death. Ellie, who hasn't written more than a grocery list in decades of marriage, had no intention of writing a memoir. It's not until she realizes how broke he left her that she decides to write a whitewashed account of her life with the Great Man of Letters. Widow's Walk spends over a year on the New York Times bestseller list. Critics hail Ellie's talent, the revelatory way she writes about grief, and how to live through it.

Ellie enjoys the attention, but happily thinks that'll be the end of her literary career—until her agent starts asking about another book…

3.0 out of 5 stars Short story, good but not great November 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
First let me say that I love Jennifer Weiner and think her writing has improved with each book. But this one reads like an outline for a story instead of a full-fledged short story. The characters are thin and the plot is even thinner. It certainly isn't a "haunting" story as it says in the description.

This very much seemed to be like something a publisher put out to keep interest in Jennifer Weiner between books. Because of the lack of detail in the story, the price, and the lack of thought in putting this together, I was disappointed. I think a much better example of a short story like this is perhaps Lawrence Block's Ehrengraf's books The Ehrengraf Defense (Ehrengraf for the Defense) which is complete as short story. There is an art to the short story and it isn't just something that wasn't long or complete enough to make up a whole book.

If you can get this cheap enough, it's an okay read.

1.0 out of 5 stars just terrible May 30, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book begins with the death of Gerald, the husband of Ellie, the protagonist. Ellie, who has no writing experience, has no intention of writing a memoir of her marriage to Gerald until she realizes how completely broke he left her. She decides to write a memoir of her life with the great writer and how it was far from the fairy-tale marriage she thought it would be when she married him. Her husband was a completely reprehensible man who seduced her and spun her a web of lies in order to get her to be with him. She suffered a difficult life with him, being the fetcher of coffee and the women that waited on and for him while he did what he pleased, continuing to have affairs with other women and just expecting Ellie to bite her tongue and keep a stiff upper lip, which she did.
I did not enjoy this story at all, which was kindof disappointing since I usually really enjoy Jennifer Weiner's writing. It was not written well and felt very under-developed. Not to mention, it was extremely depressing with no redeemable qualities. There weren't even any characters for the reader to relate to or like. I felt this story was definitely a flop.

1.0 out of 5 stars No More Weiner for Me February 13, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this novel since it was a short story and only 99 cents. I think this is a new thing that Jennifer Weiner is trying. She is trying to switch over from women's literature/chicklit to thriller or mystery and it 100 percent is not working for me at all. I love thrillers and mysteries and when the writer knows what they are doing, it can keep you on the edge of your seat. Between this short story and the other one I read, "Recalculation" I think I am done purchasing short stories by her period.

In "A Memoir of Grief [Continued]" Eleanore Good is dealing with the death of her husband, Gerald King who was a literary giant in New York. We find out through Eleanore's remembrances of Gerald, that perhaps the only person that saw Gerald as a king was truly her since what the reader finds out about him is not good at all. Eleanore, is definitely not someone I was rooting for at the end of the story, instead I wished all of her machinations would be brought to light since she justifies everything she does and is doing for her husband.

I really loved Weiner's previous novels from her heyday but these short stories and some of the most recent published ones are not my cup of tea at all. The main problem with this novel is that she has to be able to tell us so much more in a short amount of team. She has to be able to grab the reader fully and keep them wholly invested in just a few short pages. In my opinion, she just was not able to do that and I think she would have been better served working on this for a while before publishing it.

I definitely do not recommend it.
