Still hunger,

This review is from: Memoir: Delaware County Prison (Paperback)
I am not sure how I came about this book. I believe I requested one book to review and somehow was given this one and another. Considering it was offered to me I felt compelled to read it and write a review.I found Mr. Hall's debut to be quite interesting, but a slow story that never landed. While reading it I kept thinking something is going to happen but it never did. I am not sure what the authors attempt was. Maybe a memoir was not the way to go, possibly fiction? I guess I expected something like this show on HBO called "Prisoner Cell Block H" gritty raw and ACTION PACKED. Memoir had no luster it lacked history and reasoning. I hope the authors next attempt "Smoking Cigarettes" has a much better story line.

i had the chance to meet the author in one of the most unusual circumstances & found him to be a really nice guy. he gave me a copy of this book & when i started to read it, i couldn't put it down. how he speaks of the prison system & how they work things in there is right on point. the beatings, the unfair treatment because of color & sexual preference, and the lack of cooperation from the people who were suppose to be helping him made me want to cry for this guy. having had first hand experience with the prisoners & the prison itself, i felt kind of bad for the author. i don't care what he did to get in there (robbery maybe?), it doesn't make it right for him to be treated that way & besides, there are straight, white, rich men who do much worse & get much less time & punishment. the system sucks. it was strange to see names that i recognized in the book as well as old friends. i just wish he would have wrote more about how he got in there & why he had the detainers. i'm hoping a second book comes out explaining what happened to him after he left the prison & how his life changed because of it. "Memoir" is not bad for a first book.

Very Disappointed,
By A Customer
This review is from: Memoir: Delaware County Prison (Paperback)
I heard Reginald on the radio and I ran right to get his book and I was very disappointed with the book because he really didn't go into detail about what really happened while he was in Delaware County Prison. Because he is not really telling what went on in the prison as far as him talking about straight men that he turned out.

i brought memoirs two days after i heard reginald hall on power 99 in philadelphia. I wanted to know first hand what actually goes down in jail..a few people i know that have done time just come out and say "oh it was cool" or they don't say anything. i know for a fact that if someone was locked down for a nice minute they probaly have did some freaky stuff in jail. i know of dudes that came home with aids..the book was amusing but he could have went a lil' deeper into actual events that happened. i would recommend it though

I recieved a friend invite a few days ago from then young man. After hearing about this book I decided to give it a chance.I am very glad I did.I really enjoyed Reginald Hall's Freshman novel.I am also looking forward to reading much more from him in the future.I found Memoir very informative into the young gay male's world. And I can see how he has become such a role model to his peer's.While I have read other book's on this topic this book for me dug deeper into what was really going on in the mind of the main character.I feel in love with Reg (as he was often called by peer's while incarcerated ) particular style of writing.Reginald Hall is a shining star the way he described some things I felt as if Donald Goines had passed down his pen and blessed young Reg.Kudo's to you Reg keep them coming and you will have a fan for life.

Nothing to say except that I did not like it. I expected more. I thought I would read a lot about how life is for a gay person in prison.

"Just ok",

Memoir was an ok book. To me the author kept going back and forth to much between cells and there was really no prison love there it was all a fantasy. Like i like him and wonder do he know i should show him i do kind of love. When and if you read it you will say to your self all he do is change cells in this book and that there really is no love story behind those bars. That is it. It's "JUST OK". I thought it would be similar to "IN LOVE WITH A THUG" but is nothing like it. That was a great book. I am currently reading "Smoking Cigarette's"

Pitiful. If you want a book that has no point to it and too many grammatical errors to count this book is for you.

Fine for what it was...,

I read Memoir: Delaware County Prison in a few hours. Reginald's story telling was straight to the point and fresh. However, I typically am drawn to books whose main character is at least sympathetic, and I found the author's experience to be extremely unsympathetic. At no point did I, the reader, feel that he was the least bit remorseful for what he did to get himself into this situation.Rather, he was just sorry that he got caught.
We the readers are treated to a rainstorm of tears and homesickness, laced with his quest to find the right guy with the right feet. Nothing was ever right for this poor soul. It was too hot in E-Block, and too cold in the trailers..everything was too nasty and the food wasn't good enough so he opted to starve himself than eat what was given him. Everytime he was moved somewhere relatively better, he messes it up. There were a few intances where other inmates were trying to use him as their form of "release" and some even took a liking to him, and he used it to get what he wanted. But then, later, he complains that he can't understand why one day, the inmates like him, and the next day they don't. On the synopsis at the back cover, there is talk of drug dabbling and illicit sex..and I found nothing of the sort in the story. The author's narrative was however very entertaining and probably at times inadvertently so. Overall, I thought it was a good book; it certainly kept my attention. But, I love to read about people who I feel I can root for, and with him, I felt, "Let him stay his behind in there!"

This Book was very well written ,Reginald Hall takes the reader inside behind prison walls to experience life as he lived it, I really enjoyed this book, my only issue is that The author did not expose how Violent and brutal life behind bars really is, but I guess it was his personal experience that he wrote about, other han that it was a Very Good Book & I recommend it!Im half way thru his other book Smoking Ciggarets and so far it too is very Good!
