'Memoir' is quite simply one of the best books I am ever likely to read. It is achingly beautiful in its prose, despite the very dark subject matter it deals with. McGahern's love for his mother is beautifully described and at times on reading his description of her illness I had to pause from reading as I was so tearful. This is a superb read.
