About an unscrupulous businessman who tells his own story and doesn't think he's unscrupulous at all - just practical. If it takes a bribe to get ahead, you bribe. Van Harrington arrives in Chicago penniless, gets a lowly job with a meat packing firm, and begins his climb up the ladder, doing whatever it takes. His family is appalled by his actions, but he rationalizes everything. At novel's end he is a US senator. Herrick, to his credit, does not have Harrington suffer much for his behavior - it is handled all very realistically.
