5.0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Military Memoir?, September 9, 2002

This review is from: The Memoirs of General the Baron de Marbot (Paperback)
Well, maybe not THE greatest, but I can't think of a better one right now and I have read a lot of them. Marbot was an ADC to several of Napoleon's Marshals and went on more than one mission for the Emperor himself. To be truthfull, Marbot is not perfect, he brags a little, but much of what he writes about is documented elsewhere, and he without doubt was an accomplished officer who knew his trade VERY well. He fought in nearly every campaign, from 1800 through Waterloo, and was present at many of the big battles of the era, usually in a position to give insights into corp level decisions. His report on Eylau is his most repeated story, though his stories form 1809 are my favorites. This is a must read, really a MUST read, for Napoleonic readers.
