I have always been told that Sir Joshua Reynolds is an ancestor of mine. I'm not sure that is the truth, but after reading this book, by someone who actually knew the gentleman, I would welcome the thought that his genes, however diluted, are intermingled with mine. Without him, art in Great Britain would not have attained its great stature. The illustrations include much, but not all, of his extraordinary work.
