5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE, October 19, 2000
This review is from: Memoirs of a Papillon : The Canine Guide to Living with Humans without Going Mad (Paperback)
This book is a MUST HAVE for any dog owner who ever wondered whats really going on in those tiny little heads of theirs. Genevieve is quite a mischevious little girl who will have you in stitches from start to finish. Being born in the 'home for unwed mothers' and having to drink from the 'furry milk machine' had no adverse effects on this dog! She's a dog with lots of attitude, creativity and a great sense of humor. Every dog owner (or future owner) should have a copy of this book. Its a GREAT gift idea for your dog-loving friends who may be too embarassed to admit they really don't know what their dogs are thinking.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "must" for all dog lovers -- and their companions!, September 7, 2000
This review is from: Memoirs of a Papillon : The Canine Guide to Living with Humans without Going Mad (Paperback)
Wonderfully witty, Memoirs Of A Papillon: The Canine Guide To Living With Humans Without Going Mad is the story of Genevieve, a two-year-old papillon, who "comments" to dog owners through her human companion Dennis Fried on such diverse issues as driving tips for dogs, the tragedy of doorbells in television commercials, measuring the intelligence of humans, finding a reason for cats, how prehistoric dogs saved the caveman's bacon, converting a home into an agility course, and productive kitchen behavior. This little compendium of canine wisdom and insight is a "must" for all dog lovers and companions!

This book is hilarious and laughing outloud funny. It is written from the standpoint of a Papillon, but even people with other dog breeds or no dogs at all will get a kick out of this book. It is very cleverly written with several pictures of Genevieve and her humans. It is a charming read and would make a great gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Standout, June 24, 2000
This review is from: Memoirs of a Papillon : The Canine Guide to Living with Humans without Going Mad (Paperback)
Most books in my library that were written by papillons are too estoric for for most peoples tastes. Finally, thanks to Genevieve, we have a straight, no nonsense view of living life among the lower classes (humans). How refreshing to read a dog who cares not a twit for political correctness (cats beware), or the kind of scandal sheet fare churned out by so many of the current canine literary wordsmiths. Genevieve tells it like it is, and lets the dog biscuits fall where they may. A note to human readers: the book contains a test designed to measure dog/human compatability. This section of the book should be ripped out and destroyed before your dog has a chance to administer it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Memoirs of a Papillon---Wonderful, June 23, 2000
This review is from: Memoirs of a Papillon : The Canine Guide to Living with Humans without Going Mad (Paperback)
I absolutely loved this book. The writing was very clever and hilarious and had me laughing all the way through it. I especially loved the chapter on elementary education, and how the trainer who Genevieve called the terminator, was written. You could really visualize what was going on in Genevieve's little tricky mind, and laugh about how she was going to outwit Judy the trainer. I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves animals and likes to be entertained. Funny, funny, funny!

5.0 out of 5 stars Call me surprised, March 22, 2001

My friend Karen Helms loaned me her copy of this delightful book, which she figured I'd cotton to because our family dog is a papillon. As a realist who views things anthropomorphic with suspicion, I doubted author Dennis Fried could make readers believe his papillon Genevieve wrote this book. "How silly," I thought. "He'll never pull it off."

I thought wrong. Fried did pull it off, with remarkable creativity and humor and a great deal of insight. He must have had a tremendous amount of help from the lovely Genevieve.

If you've ever wondered what your dog is thinking (and are sure you want to know), feisty little Genevieve will tell you in no uncertain terms.

So, take a break from the rat race. Let Genevieve teach you the fine art of "zooming." A few zooms around the living room will make you feel like a pup again. No bones about it.

As the owner of a papillion, I was so amazed at how closely this book is to reality. It is a definite must for any papillion owner or anyone that has interest in the breed. The book is so true to life and the traits of the breed show through in the hillarious story.

You will laugh, you will cry, if you own a papillion you will understand, if you want a papillion, this book will make your decision that much easier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humorous and Entertaining!, November 8, 2000
This review is from: Memoirs of a Papillon : The Canine Guide to Living with Humans without Going Mad (Paperback)
Clever and well written. I wasn't sure what to expect in a book written from a dog's point of view. Dennis Fried captured Genevieve's personality in a humorous and entertaining way. I could see Genevieve barking at the doorbell, hiding under furniture, and zooming around the house. The photos of the dog were a nice addition. Well done!

Genevieve, a most precious "dog", tells a refreshing, clever account of what life is with two loving, caring humans. This type of biography leaves one with a feeling of goodness.
