1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY
I initially bought a 10 pack of the memorex 4x dvd-r's and had no problems, so I opted to invest in the 25 pack. The price on amazon brought the costs down to about $1/per, a pretty good deal or so I thought. I have a Panasonic DVD recorder (set top w/HDD) I use to make DVD's with. I got the spindle and started dubbing programs from my HDD to DVD. The first one burned...

5.0 out of 5 stars So far so good, November 10, 2003

Using these disks with Optorite DD0203. When you receive the spindle, it says that you have to upgrade your DVD writer firmware to the latest one available by your manufacturer otherwise you might have problems. I've upgraded to firmware 2.16 (have to download from http://www.optorite.com/firmware.htm). I used the dos version upgrade, but you can use windows version too.
I wanted to order DVD+R disks instead of DVD-R but somehow messed up the ordering so I ended up with DVD-R. I've read that DVD+R have better compatibility with standalone DVD players so I was pretty worried that these won't play in your DVD player. I was suprised to find out that they play even in ancient standalone players. No problems with compatibility. So far I've burned around 10 DVDs without any problems at 4x. I used multiple programs but prefer Nero 6.0.

4.0 out of 5 stars Usually a great disc, December 14, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Memorex 4.7GB 4x DVD-R (25-Pack Spindle) (Electronics)
I have burned 400 of these so far and had great luck except for one pack of 25 that didn't want to be seen on my sony dwu10a. They did burn on my liteon ldw411s after updating the firmware. Unfortuneately some of them still couldn't be seen on my apex 1100 or my sony dvd player. One bad batch though has not turned me away from memorex as they have been very good so far. If not for that they would be a 5 star product as I have had only 2 bad burns and they may not have been the disks fault but were probably caused by a bad file and a power interuption. If anyone is using a usb external setup and getting a bad burn right after the lead in they may want to consider hooking up their burner internally as this was a problem I had and it cost me a lot of disks to find out that it was a reset of the usb and not the disks or burner. Since moving it to internal I have not had but 2 coasters and they were as said probably not the disks either. Hopefully this will help someone. One bad Batch, but, Memorex still rules lol.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good speed and not a single coaster., September 30, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Memorex 4.7GB 4x DVD-R (25-Pack Spindle) (Electronics)
Works great with my new BTC 4x dvd+/-rw drive. The 4x speed is as advertised and not one coaster after > 20 burns(backups of my harddrives and some movies). Now, I can bring all my son's movies with us on trips without the fear of damage or loss. The backups can be played on any DVD-ROM drives and all my home DVD players plays all my backups wonderfully as well, just like originals. The service from Amazon is always great but I did not get it from here because I need is urgently and got a slightly better deal from a local store last week. Grab them while they are still available. Amazon's price is competitive and shipping is FREE! Do search with google to try find a better deal and will you always end up back here. Great Job Amazon. Keep up the great work.

The first one burned fine, the second died, the third burned fine, the fourth died. It seemed like every other one was a coaster. I tested my theory by skipping over the next coaster and choosing the next "good" one. This proved 100% accurate, I was able to use a grand total of 12 out of 25 disks! This was very discouraging bc everytime one dies, the recorder goes into a recover mode to preserve your dubbing info and it takes 3-4 minutes to get back up. This was a big waste of time and energy. I just bought a 25 pack of Fuji dvd-r's and every one so far has worked beautifully, it makes dubbing fun again when you have good media. I would not buy another memorex product based on my experience, go with Fuji.

I bought this spindle in December to make some home movies as Christmas presents. I had purchased the DVD+R spindle in November and found my cheapie Memorex DVD player couldn't read it. (Go to dvdrhelp.com and check the database on your player or burner to see what media works.)

As indicated, these Memorex DVD-R's worked flawlessy at 4X burns. I was able to view my home movies on all DVD players in the family whether brand new or 3-5 years old.

Amazon's price is good (a little better over Christmas) and definately better than what you find in local stores.

I'm saving my DVD-R spindle for burning movies and DVD+R for data/computer backups.

I purchased the 50 pack for $49.00 and everytime I burn a disk I am getting the following errors: Sense Key=Medium Error, Sense Code = 0x73, 0x04. I burn the same data using Fujifilm disk and it work perfectly every time. Well I remember having a similar problem with CD-R from Memorex. This is the last straw and I will never purchase a Memorex product again. The are pushing junk to the public. This is a good way to gain a bad image.

I recently purchased a Panasonic DVD Video Recorder (model DMR-E80H). I purchased these disks at the same time. I have used about 20 of the disks and thus far have had a 50% failure rate.
