4.0 out of 5 stars So far so good
I just finished a Fuji 25 8X pack spindle and was 25 for 25. I wanted to give Memorex a try since it cost a little more. Upon closer inspection between a Fuji and Memorex's disks, it looks like they are both made from the same factory. Everything from the top surface (smooth silver) to the rim (silver) is made from the same materials and color. Both of the bottom...

I say read this before buying because I am not going to trash Memorex, I am going to explain what will go wrong and why. These discs should work for a while. Memorex used to be a very highly regarded name in fact. Recent Memorex releases have gone down in quality. I scanned and diagnosed some of these Memorex discs, and found out a few things...They have manufacturing label CMC MAG, the worst manufacturing label on the market. Memorex doesn't even make these discs! They buy them from CMC MAG and write Memorex on them! Some CMC MAG discs have gone bad and completely corrupted in less than 2 months! If you are using these for anything but temporary, stay away. The quality is good, while it lasts.

Both of the bottom recording layers are a color purple. Great that Memorex don't use the cheap looking white paper surface similar to their CD-R for this DVD-R model. For about $5 more and a microscope's eyes the quality of Memorex's edge is much smoother then the jagged Fuji.

So far I am 4 for 4 with the 8X Memorex's disc burning at a full 8X. I am using a firewire LaCie's 16x d2 DVD±RW Double Layer (NEC drive) with a Dell laptop to make my own DVD movie and to back up files. I use Roxio and other software and they all burn fine. Yes, I have Sony's CD-R that after 2-years starts to "Pudding" faking of the top surface. Hopefully these Memorex's DVDs will last as long as my TDK's CD-R since are made from similar materials.

Update:
Please note that 8x DVD are made for faster DVD burners for the computer with decent software and hardware. These disks do not work on typical DVD-recorders for the TV since those are design to record at 2-4x speed. Most TV DVD-recorders are picky and do advise what type of mediums they prefer.

1.0 out of 5 stars be aware... bad product, July 6, 2005

This review is from: Memorex 4.7GB/8x DVD-R (25-Pack Spindle) (Electronics)
I bought 50 DVD spindle. Used them all with no problem. Once tried to see the movies they all started freezing 1/2 way. I called my friend and he had the same problem. It looks like I have to turn off the DVD player for about 15 minutes and wait for the DVD temperature to cool down. The normal heat generated from the DVD player is affecting the DVD disks. Once I do that, it works fine. Unfortunately I already bought another 100 spindle from Best Buy, but these were worse, I recorded with no problem but it froze all together once tried to watch the movie. I tried 5 disks with same result. I returned them with full refund. I used generic DVD from Staples and worked great. I transfered some DVD's and they worked fine. I'm using Philips now on NEC DVD burner and they worked great. After doing some research and reading some reviews on chat lines I found that a lot of people having the same problem. One person said that Memorex use the cheapest die for thier DVD's. Please be aware, they might burn fine but when you need to retrieve the data is were you'll have the problem.

3.0 out of 5 stars didn't work with Emerson EWR20V4, November 28, 2004

These didn't work with my new DVD recorder. These may only work with recorders and burners that go at 8X speed. Mine goes at 1X, 2X, or 4X and these Memorex DVD-Rs apparently can't work at 1X, 2X, or 4X speed. I didn't realize that until after I tried these blank DVD-Rs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Burns coasters at 8X or fixes wobbly tables, February 5, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Memorex 4.7GB/8x DVD-R (25-Pack Spindle) (Electronics)
We need a 0 Star rating for this item. The first 3 out of the box had errors after burning. Each failure was immediately rectified by replacing with a 4x memorex, 8x Maxell and a 4X Maxell, so the problem is in the disk itself and not the files or the DVD writer (or the operator).

Like the others say, stay away from these 8X Memorex dvd-Rs unless you need coasters. I recommend the Maxell DVD-Rs at any speed. They are heavier and so far I have had a 100% success rate.

**follow up to say: I have been archiving data files and home movies on Sony and Maxell dvd-rs -still with a 100% success rate on my system. The Sony 8Xs burn successfully at 16X and the Maxell 8Xs will burn at 12X.

These Memorex had 5 failures out of 9, and one of the successes quit working after about two months. I threw the rest away because I couldn't depend on them and although Memorex said I could file a warranty claim with them, they never responded to my query of how exactly to do so.

At least my patio table doesn't wobble on those uneven cobble stones anymore, and I have a few new bird scarers for the garden :)

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor product, February 16, 2005

I ordered these from Amazon.com upon their recommendation to use in my new Panasonic DVD Recorder. The first 8 disks failed immediately and the next 2 took a couple minutes to fail. After we closely examined the disks, we saw that each and every disk has little scratches that prevent it from being used in any machine. I would not recommend anyone purchase this product. I remember the days when Memorex was a top quality product --- no more

I bought these discs not too long ago and only about 30% passed verify. I complained to Memorex and they sent me some replacements. The replacements are terrible also. I will never use Memorex DVD's again

1.0 out of 5 stars Unreliable Product, May 20, 2005
By

This review is from: Memorex 4.7GB/8x DVD-R (25-Pack Spindle) (Electronics)
While using this DVD-R, I had success rate of about 66% to 75%.

I did some research and found out some interesting things. First, I read internet posts describing Memorex 8x DVD-R media doesn't work well at 8x speed and that 4x is recommended for better result. So far this has worked. But this is very disappointing because this product is supposed to work at 8x speed.

Another post I read was much more disconcerting, because the poster wrote his Memorex discs, which he burned months ago, was no longer working and that he lost large number of files.

At this point, I'm considering purchasing different brand of DVD-R and backing up my files all over again just to be safe.

I had the same situation as previous posters, I went thru a couple 50-spools of the 4x and had almost NO problems. Then I couldn't find any more of those and had to switch to the 8x... and now something like 3/4th of my current spool fails to burn with "power calibration error". I have a sony 4x DRU-500A.
