Warranty Nightmare,
By Green Eric (Santa Fe, NM, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Memorex 20x LightScribe Internal DVD Recorder (32023220) (Personal Computers)
Mine broke down after 21 days - stopped functioning at the same time as it developed a very loud buzzing noise. The store where I bought it (not a fine retailer like Amazon) refused to exchange it. Then I entered the dark world of Memorex warranty. It took two different phone calls (each over a half hour) just to get an RMA number. Then I shipped it (a month ago). Today I called to ask about the status of the replacement. The warehouse said they hadn't received the broken one yet. UPS was good enough to give me the date they received it, the door of the building it was delivered to and the name of the person who signed for it. I called Memorex back with this information. They said it will take until Monday to find it, then 4-6 weeks to send out the replacement. In the meantime, I'm without a drive. There ought to be a law that companies put as much enthusiasm into warranty as sales! I've used Memorex products since I was a kid (my first tape recorder), but this one will be my last.

THIS DRIVE WILL NOT WORK,
By
This review is from: Memorex 20x LightScribe Internal DVD Recorder (32023220) (Personal Computers)
Tried everything, followed all recomendations. System still fails to see the lightscribe portion of the drive. You have to uninstall the driver and then restart, now the lightscribe appears. If you play or record a dvd or cd and then try to burn a label the lightscribe function is lost. You have to uninstall and restart again. I should have listened to my friends, "don't buy memorex" warning. Apparently it's a known problem cause tech support simply said take it back to the store. No more memorex anything for me.!!!! They sell lousy disks also.

changed from HP to Memorex,

This review is from: Memorex 20x LightScribe Internal DVD Recorder (32023220) (Personal Computers)
I had a Hp lightscribe burner and a stack of memorex disc that did not work with HP.
Purchased other disc that did not work with HP. I have one memorex dual layer burner already so I went with memorex again. One with Lightscribe so I can do labels. Memorex seems to be more compatible with all disc that I have used so far and run their disc on sale a lot of the time where as Hp doesn't. i Sold the HP burner at a yard sale, still almost new. I know HP is a good product but seems to only use HP disc. I do use only HP printers and scaners.

If you have vista, don't bother.,

If you have windows vista, don't bother with this drive. After numerous firmware updates, installing more applications on my desktop (they have their own diagnositcs utility which should have told me something), emails to support where I was told it's an operating system thing, wasting $20 on a spindle and making 6 or 7 coasters, I give up. Maybe it'd work better on XP or something. Unless you enjoy spending 10 minutes a pop to find out it'll give you a communication error and use up a disk, buy something else.

I originally had purchased two of these drives from a local retailer who happened to be part of a large computer chain that is going out of business. Of course I failed to check out the reviews on Amazon first before I purchased them. However, in this case I am actually glad that I didn't. I run Windows XP PRO on my computer and will not have anything to do with Vista until they come out with their "service pack 3" to correct all of the bugs that should have been corrected before releasing it. Anyhow, that is a review for another time.
I installed both of these drives in my home computer and have had absolutely no problems with them whatsoever. Admittedly, I have only done a couple of actual recordings so far, but they have worked fine so far with everything that they are supposed to do and I don't foresee any problems with them at all. As a matter of fact, installing both of these drives after taking out my old outdated ones actually made a difference in the performance of my computer as a whole. Now I don't know if it really has that much to do with these drives themselves, or just the fact that I got rid of the old ones. So on a final note I would like to recommend these drives for anyone still running XP as they work great.

Amid the dozen or so cd/dvd drives I've owned, my Memorex drives have held up the best. My computer has three now, one a 2002 vintage Memorex SM Dual 1x that has written over 200 disks (mostly DVD's of late).
This LightScribe drive has made a little over 150 home movies and data DVD's so far - approx 53,700 Gig. It runs about 4 hours every day, with the other two Memorex drives running the other 4 hours. Memorex DVD burners have my vote of approval!

Despite others that said this didn't work for them, I have had great success with this DVD writer! It is a little noisy but it does what it is supposed to do. I am not a computer geek but I was able to install and use this in a matter of less than an hour. I don't make a lot of CDs or DVDs but the ones I have made have turned out great! I would buy this again!

Plus: It does as advertised. The images are easy to make and add a very custom look to anyone's CD/DVD collection.
Minus: I wish the pics stood out just a little more. This is an excellent product. I would recommend it to everyone.

Garbage,

This thing is junk. I installed it and it would see disks, but would not read them. There were no errors in the device manager. Installed the Nero software and that caused my PC (Win XP) to hang and start throwing error messages. Called Memorex and obviously there are known problems because when I described the problem they didn't ask me any questions or attempt to troubleshoot. They told me to return it, or send it to them and they'd send me a new one. No Thanks! I pulled it out of my PC and my PC still had problems. Apparently the device or the Nero software corrupted a driver. Machine would not start properly in Safe Mode. After 3 attempts it finally did. I found a few suprises in MSConfig in the form of new Nero services that were starting automatically despite the fact that when I installed it, I unchecked every box. Avoid this thing like the plague. This is the first negative review I've ever written about a device, but I feel that strongly after having an entire afternoon taken from me.
