Watch for dead pixels and Tiger Direct!...,
By Orpheus "Maestro" (Upstate, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Memorex Mi8000BLK iFlip 8.4-Inch Portable Video System for iPod (Black) (Electronics)
The unit is not bad for its ability to charge the ipod while on DC and for its decent and very customizable IQ with videos. The photos don't look good on its LCD screen at all due to blowing out of highlights and distortion of color. The audio is OK, but not great and there is a picking up of the drive's whine and noise that most of the time gets through the speakers at the highest volume settings you will need. I used the Ipod 80GIG video and it fit in the iFlip OK with the 60GIG bracket that came with the iFlip.
As for Tiger Direct, I had to call 5 times to arange for the return and full refund with a call tag due to a bad pixel on the screen! Every time someone said a different thing and 2 people promised me to issue call tags for return. Both did nothing. On the fifth call I got lucky and spoke with a nice guy who has just assured me that he will issue a call tag and gave me his extension number for future reference. So... they do have some good people working for them, but what a hassle this has been! We will see if they come through with the refund for the unit that came from them with a dead pixel. I will post a follow up if and when they do!... As to the unit, I suggest buying locally and checking it out thoroughly and with a return policy. It is also not small nor light, so don't think you will carry it along in your pocket of the coat or jacket. This is for these times you go on the plane or the train for a long trip. The audio and video can be just as easily connected from the ipod to any TV or monitor so you don't need the Iflp to do it although it can. Enjoy....

Great Product but NOT with the new iPod Classic,
By Stella LaRue "kellygirl" (Illinois) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Memorex Mi8000BLK iFlip 8.4-Inch Portable Video System for iPod (Black) (Electronics)
I have loved my memorex iflip and have happily used it for over a year with my 5th generation 80GB. It has great sound, pretty good picture, consistent quality video, and a great battery life. I've been very happy with it and use it daily.
However, I just bought the new iPod classic 160GB. And found, when you dock the new iPod Classic, the iflip gets an error message (saying that TV out is selected, connect a video device). The problem is, that the iPod is connected to a video device (THE IFLIP) This is apparently a pretty common problem because Apple has kindly put a notice about the error message on their site, but indicates the fix is to connect a 30 pin AV connector to the ipod. Something that isn't possible with the Memorex because the built in dock IS the connection. So, now I have a great new ipod, and a great old iflip and a bunch of itunes videos I can't watch. I'm afraid to buy another ipod video becuase of concerns over getting the same error message. And, I hate to get rid of a really great video player.

Poorly Designed,

This review is from: Memorex Mi8000BLK iFlip 8.4-Inch Portable Video System for iPod (Black) (Electronics)
As of this writing, there really are not that many choices for a portable video system for the iPod. We chose this one because of the larger screen mostly. At least in the store, the demo video looked better. That is about all that I will say is good about it.
The problems are in the design. Obviously people who did not think too much when designing it. When playing music for example, a graphical letter "M" is displayed on the screen. It does not even move. Therefore, screen burn is a problem if you choose to play a lot of music with this. When playing video via the S-Video cable connected to your TV, you cannot turn off the screen in order to save battery life. Even if you close the lid, both when using S-Video and playing music, it is still displaying as there is no video screen cut-off switch when the lid is closed. The quality of using S-Video to the TV is sub-par. The picture has periodic interference like the cable was poorly connected or on top of some other electronic device. We tried two different TV's and had the same issue. Battery life is about 5 hours which isn't too bad. This utit is fairly bulky (thick). So it is not as easily portable as one may need. One major annoyance is they sell this as a portable device but it does not come with a DC charger for the vehicle. I recommend staying away from this Memorex Mi8000BLK iFlip if you are not in "need" of one. It is not worth the money it costs for these problems. If you do buy, try to stay away from playing a lot of music with it unless you want a big letter "M" burned into the screen.

thought it would be better,

you have to dig your fingernails in the crack to open it, no button release or indent.
something is seriously wrong though... i edit video professionaly and i know abit about aspect ratios, 16:9 & 4:3. when outputting widescreen from the ipod a 4:3 movie will have black bars on the top and bottom of the picture as well as the sides, (WHY??), the same 4:3 movie in the iFlips 16:9 mode only streches it horizontaly. Anoying! now, outputting normal from the iPod a 4:3 movie will fill the iFlip screen vertically but the sides of the movie will be cut off alittle, your not getting the whole picture, like pan-scan. what's goin on? i thought this was gonna be a great product. better off playing videos on a laptop! picture is better, screen is bigger and you can play DVD's.

When I puchased this item, I wanted to replace my portable DVD player. this has done just that for me. I travel alot and this really makes life easier for me. I can watch movies and listen to music and still have battery life in the iPod. The screen is great for 2 people to watch as is the dual headphone jacks. Great product.

Great product but depends on the price,

I decided to try this out as the price dropped substantially ($200 to $79) and I really like watching movies/TV shows on my video ipod when traveling. The challenge has always been the battery life as the Ipod screen tends to kill the battery very fast.
Since I had a $50 Amazon certificate, I said what the heck. Many of the opinions prior such as it can be scratched easily, it's a bit difficult to open at first, and that stuff gets stuck in the speaker holes are all valid, ironically so as I thought those people were just very anal. Well, they are true but don't distract from the positives: 1. It lasts forever as you don't use the Ipod screen and I've read that this unit can go for over 8 hours of video. I've tried five at the most and it still was going. 2. It's a great travel companion as now I have portable speakers w/ my Ipod as well. 3. The quality of the video is as good as my old portable DVD player so I'm pretty happy with it. Overall, I think $100 is a fair price and knowing what I know would purchase it again. Lastly, Amazon is the bomb...

I picked this up from ToyRUs on clearance for 60$
I remember this being a LOT more money. Ive been trying to pick a portable dvd player for my kid for long trips. But those dvd players can get expensive for a decent unit. This thing however, you can use Handbrake or any video convertor app. rip whatever video to MP4, with 480x232 resolution, 256mb video bitrate. and you get nice clear video clips. Not to mention, when its not for your kids, you can watch your video podcasts on this , while your waiting in your car, or on a long trip. And if my 5th gen ipod dies, I can get a new hard drive for it. Yes it stinks that this wont work with the Classic or newer ipods, but Im ok with that. Its cheaper to fix my 5th gen ipod AND this unit than it is to pick up a good sony portable dvd player. THanks for reading.

Serious problems with aspect ratio,
By Mayor Bloomburger (San Francisco, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Memorex Mi8000BLK iFlip 8.4-Inch Portable Video System for iPod (Black) (Electronics)
I got this as a gift and, even though there are some problems with it, I'm going to keep it for long flights. Why on earth they don't show movies anymore on long flights is beyond me, but this device is a good solution since it's a lot cheaper than even $300 laptops and less of a pain to set up.
The picture is not pirated-video bad like another reviewer says. Its not very good, but its better than horrible. The sound is, I think, very good. A couple other reviewers mention the horrible aspect ratio problems. This alone would have me return the device, but it was a gift. Even if your ipod and the device are both set for wide-screen, it will stretch the picture horizontally but not vertically, leaving a ridiculously narrow image with black bars on the top of the screen. This is totally unacceptable. Using a 4:3 setting on your ipod and the wide-screen setting on the device fills up the screen but everything is short and squat and your not seeing the whole picture. SUPER LAME! Keep shopping! The best solution is to set the ipod and the device to 4:3 - you get a good image, but you only get 6 or 7 of the 8.5 inches you paid for, with black bars on the sides of the screen. This item is not light to carry around, so those missing two inches are, I feel, insult to injury. Still, even with cut-off the screen is much bigger than a PSP or iPhone and the sound is loud!

Good Video but poor design,

This review is from: Memorex Mi8000BLK iFlip 8.4-Inch Portable Video System for iPod (Black) (Electronics)
The video is good, battery life is excellent, sound is satisfactory. But the exterior design of the unit is poor.Within few days dust gets deposited in the left and right part of the ipod docking station which is mesh like thing (cannot be seen in the picture) covering audio speakers and its very difficult to clean it. The unit is thick and heavy.

Poor Sound,
This review is from: Memorex Mi8000BLK iFlip 8.4-Inch Portable Video System for iPod (Black) (Electronics)
I bought this memorex ipod video player, because it had a larger screen than the sonic player. However, the sound quality is WAY inferior with the memorex, the maximum volume is still pretty low and distorts the sound on the ipod, making it necessary additional speakers. Why have built-in speakers then?
I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. |
