A Kid's Review
This review is from: Memorex Progressive Scan DVD Player (Electronics)
First of all, I'm not a kid. :) I'm just too lazy to login. :)
Well,I've just bought it from Target for my room's TV,because the price is so low.:)I highly doubted if it could work at first, you know, it's too cheap:). After I put my "pal" format and region zero DVD into it, it worked fine! And beyond my expectation, there are hacks that can transform it into region zero DVD player! I think it's great for a 29 bucks DVD player.

When I saw this dvd player for the price in Target, I just had to get it. I had been using my ps2 to play all my dvd's, and let me just tell you those things are hopeless. With this machine though, it has progressive scan, multiple views, and all the fancy stuff for a very low price, I just couldn't give it up. It is also very pickup friendly this thing is so light!!!! Its about as light as a book. Anyways if your looking for a super slim, cost affective, user friendly dvd player, this is it.

Don't buy this one!,
This review is from: Memorex Progressive Scan DVD Player (Electronics)
Very disappointed. Memorex claims that this DVD player will play DVDs, VCDs, Kodak Picture CDs, and music CDs, but all it will play for me are pre-recorded DVDs. It does that very well, and has lots of remote control features for the price, but it won't play my pre-recorded CDs; it won't play any VCD I've ever tried; and it won't play any home-burned DVDs or Picture CDs made on either a Dell or an HP computer.
I returned the first one I bought (thinking it was just a bad machine), but the replacement behaves in just the same way. There are much better machines out there if you need a DVD player to handle lots of different things.

Memorex means "customer unfriendly" junk!,

I sadly purchased this dvd player from the local Target with high hopes and a thin wallet. The player lasted three months (guarantee limit) plus four days. On the disasterous fourth day I inserted a previously playable disc into the unit, pushed the disc tray "close" button - the tray closed and then opened, closed and then opened, closed and then opened and on and on. I then resorted to the manual microprocessor "reset" procedure i.e. turn off unit, unplug for at least one minute, then reinsert power plug and "bingo" the unit SHOULD work properly. Unfortunately, that was not the case. It continued to auto cycle - tray in, tray out etc. I returned the dvd player to Target - they were no help (expired guarantee), but gave me Memorex telephone number. I called Memorex in Florida - their customer no-service informed me it would be $98 to repair plus shipping and handling for a $45 machine. No thanks - I will just buy "cheapos" in the future and exchange them up to end of 90 day guarantee(?)period WHEN they fail. The dvd player will NOT be Memorex and the dealer will not be Target!!!

worked well until it died (2 years),

I received this for Christmas in 2004, and it worked well for two years until it died in December 2006. The warranty is 90 days, so I asked Customer Support of they just expect this sort of thing? They offered to repair it for $24.75, but I could buy a new one for about the same price. Still trying to decide what to do.

So far, so good...,

I like this player because it plays "foreign" VCDs that many other "Region 1 only" DVD players won't touch (I don't have any "Region 0", "Region 2", etc. discs to play on it yet, so I don't know about how well it will play them), and it is MUCH more reliable than my other DVD players at sensing and displaying the "interesting facts" and other optional text "pop-ups" that are included with some DVD movies (like the "Back To The Future" trilogy boxed set). Also, the remote has "direct-entry" buttons for the more intricate functions like zoom, A-B repeat, etc., so that I can access those features by just pushing one button instead of having to go through a complicated menu each time the way I have to with my other players. But it is often less able than my other DVD players to properly play "problematic" discs, like scratched/worn discs or ones that were apparently not burned very "deeply" or "robustly" (like some of the "Knight Rider" whole-season boxed sets). So its performance is kind of a "mixed bag", but I really like it overall. It's been maybe six years since I bought the unit brand-new at Sears, and I've played a LOT of discs on it, too, but so far (fingers crossed) I haven't had any major problems with getting the unit to work, so I dunno... maybe I'm just lucky to have gotten a better-assembled unit, and so perhaps you other folks who have had such bad experiences with your units happened to get some of the carelessly-assembled units that are more "the norm" for these players. Who knows?

When it locked closed and stopped playing I had to take it apart to retrieve my DVD. Then I trashed it.
