Slow as molasses,

The ergonomics are good - nice rubber grip, small, keychain ring. It's all downhill after that. I use You Synchronize to keep files current between my laptop at school and my G5 desktop at home. After using the Memorex I bought the SanDisk Cruzer Titanium 512MB, advertised as 3x faster than most thumb drives. Here are my results timing the read time on the same synch with the same files on my desktop with both:
Memorex=2minutes 4 seconds SD Titanium=9.3 seconds I guess I'm stuck with the Memorex, as it isn't the seller's fault it's a pig, but my advice is DON'T BUY IT unless speed is NO concern to you. If you don't absolutely have to have 1GB, get the Titanium.

No Warranty service,

I have to agree with some of the previous reviews, Cheap outer case and it is slower than SanDisk. But the real kicker is that Memorex does not back up it's so called 1 year warranty. I had a bad USB port fry my flash drive. Sent it to Memorex via instructions emailed to me. Almost 4 months later and a half dozen warranty inquiries, still no replaced Flash Drive. My recommendation, buy a SanDisk.

Great little thumb drive!,
This review is from: Memorex 1 GB TravelDrive USB 2.0 Flash Drive ( 32507760 ) (Personal Computers)
I've had This Memorex thumb drive for quite awhile now and as a "non-traditional student" back in college I find it invaluable and wonder how I ever got away without having one when I went through college for my first degree. I've mistakenly tromped on it, dropped it in my cereal bowl, and got in the shower once before noticing it was still around my kneck. It's a very sturdy drive. I would say that a very picky person could complain that it's an ity bit too wide to fit well in the USB slots behind SOME of the older computers becuase of where the rest of the computers wiring inserts. Fix that with an extension cable, who wants to be messing around behind their computer every time they want to insert their thumb drive anyway?

I've had my 1GB Memorex drive for 6 months and it works great! I've taken to/from work every since I bought it last year and I've had no problems whatsoever...none!
I don't understand the problem with the key ring that the other reviewers had, because the cap/keyring on mine snaps on rather tight (tighter than others I've seen) and you have to give it a little tug to remove it. It has never even come close to falling off or breaking, etc. I've even dropped the drive a few times and it works like new. Plus, since its so small, I usually just slip it into my pocket instead of connecting to the strap or key chain holder. I also have a Sony microvault drive and its key ring holder is much more flimsy and slides off rather easily. Also, the speed issue that another reviewer gave is very misleading or just wrong. This is a 2.0 USB drive and its speed is great. Just now, I moved a 100mb file from it to my HD and it took 13 seconds...I'll take that speed any day!! To get this performance, you just have to make sure its connected to a USB 2.0 port, not the older 1.1 type. So, I highly recommend this little drive with its large capacity. Once connected to a PC, it acts just like another hard drive and almost as fast! I can play mp3 music and video avi files right from it with no problems. I even have a couple applications that run on it. I really wouldn't worry about the key ring holder unless you are going to abuse it or throw it (literally) around with your keys. And even then, I think it could hang in there. As long as you don't purposely abuse it, I'm sure you'll have no problems at all! Highly recommended!!!

This is OK but you can do better.,

The 1GB storage is nice but watch the ads because you should be able to get a SanDisk or maybe even a Lexar for between $55 and $65. As has been mentioned by other reviewers, this is not as fast as other thumb drives. Another drawback is the shape. Some machines have recessed and/or side by side USB ports, particularly in the front. Because the recessed areas are usually narrow, and close together, this series of USB thumb drive does not plug in unless you have a USB patch cable which makes one more thing for you to carry around. For these reasons I like my SanDisk Cruzer mini better and can only rate the Memorex as OK. Another note, if you have SD, CF, or other digital media cards, you might consider getting a mini card reader. (They run between $10 and $20 depending on the media and manufacturer) They are similar in size to some of the larger thumb drives and do have a USB patch cord but you can then use your digital media just like a thumb drive. Not to mention you can keep adding capacity with additional Digital media cards. P.S. Swimming is not a recommended activity with any electronic device ;-), someone's lucky they didn't fry their motherboard.

Dont buy Memorex,

This review is from: Memorex 1 GB TravelDrive USB 2.0 Flash Drive ( 32507760 ) (Personal Computers)
I purchased this drive in March of 2005. It worked ok but only occasionally. I consistently had to reformat the drive and it frequently lost data.
Finally after 6 months of owning, it died outright and was not recognizable by any O/S. I sent the product back to Memorex for replacement and am still waiting. Their response has been horrible. Wont return emails, phone calls or ultimately send me a replacement product which they promised to do promptly. I understand that things go bad and mistakes are made but what defines a company is their respnses to these situtations. For this reason I heartily recommend you stay away from any Memorex product regardless of the deal. Its just not worth it.

Write-protect is a Plus,
This review is from: Memorex 1 GB TravelDrive USB 2.0 Flash Drive ( 32507760 ) (Personal Computers)
Overall, excellent product.
Speed is slows down with very large files, but generally no problem. Especially I like the easy-to-use write-protect switch. In fact, I wouldn't buy a USB flash drive without the switch. Linux "Live" distrobutions will run from this device. Copy your favorite flavor (Knoppix, PCLinuxOS, Slax, Kanotix all work) to the flash pen and run from there. This is better, speed wise, than running from the CD, but has all the advantages of a Live CD-based OS. Considering the amount of compression to fit all those applications in 700MB, you'd think that applications would run slowly, but they run quick. If you consider yourself moderately adept with Linux, make two partitions on this drive. Copy Live Linux to the big partition. Set up your configuration, templates and such, and save on the small partition. Flip the write protect switch. Now you have a custom configured, fast, totally rock solid and absolutely secure OS.

Functional but poor form design,
This review is from: Memorex 1 GB TravelDrive USB 2.0 Flash Drive ( 32507760 ) (Personal Computers)
I purchased the 1GB Travel Drive to replace my 512MB Attache drive as I was running out of space even with compression (Use "convert" to convert FAT32 to NTFS and then set the compression property of the drive).
With compression turns on, the initial directory copying is quite slow. After the initial copying, I only do incremental update so the performance of the drive is quite adequate. I ended storing about 1.5GB stuff and used up about half of "disk" space so I am quite happy. In terms of the cap design, I like the cap (not drive) being attached to the keychain (unlike Attache). However, the cap design is rather poor - the hole is too small and too flimsy. My cap hole broke after one month of usage. Also I don't like the round part of the drive. It gets in the way when you try to plug two USB devices vertically - my desktop computers all seem to have such configuration for the front USB ports. This doesn't bother me much but I wish Memorex would simply copy the standard stick design instead of doing meaningless "innovations".

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I purchased this 7-8 months back and am happy with it for most part. Didn't have any formatting problems as some of the others, but the key hole is fragile and broke off. You can probably buy this thing, but be extra nice and careful with the cap.
And be careful if you have Memorex rebates. They ate away a $20 mail-in-rebate which was offered with the purchase. I called the customer service multiple times and each time, they made it harder to get the rebate - I ultimately gave up and feel cheated. |
