Put this in perspective, when someone comes on here and starts spouting nonsense that this is "mediocre" Brown, what exactly does that mean? Clifford Brown was one of the finest and most gifted musicians we ever saw, so on his worst day, he was fantastic. Come on and pay some respect where respect is due. Sure we have preferences, and that's fine brother, but don't knock greatness just 'cause you dig Brown-Roach better.

To be sure, there isn't much that can compare of Brown with his Roach days. But one doesn't compare Brown-Roach to Brown and Helen Merrill do they? It's slightly different. Just know what you're in for and you won't be disappointed.

This is an excellent disc. It's one of my favorite Clifford Brown discs. I reach for it time and time again. It's smooth, flowing and never fails to please. You'll feel the same should you pick it up. And honestly, to the cat who mentioned it's only worth something to those out there who have to have everything CB ever did....once you start tapping into what Clifford Brown was laying down, you will HAVE to have everything he ever did. I guarantee it. So, might as well ante up now and get this one. You'll be getting the rest soon enough.

if Clifford Brown had lived, Miles Davis would have taken a back seat -- maybe. He showcases his technique, his melodic sense and his swing amazingly well on this disk -- the cuts with Dameron see him surrounded by excellent musicians -- e.g., Philly JJ, and the Sweden sides are also worthy. But the solos on Philly and Choose Now are astonishing for power, grace and tone...

Not to be outdone by Blue Note and their hastily cobbled together Memorial Album, Prestige dug into their vaults of 1953 material and released this album as a tribute to Brown. Like Blue Note's album this was also first released in 1956.

As the sound samples attest this is an excellent set of recordings that capture Brown's beautiful tone. Each of the two ensembles on this album are in excellent form and this is artistically the equal of the Blue Note album to my ears. Your opinion may differ, but the key point is this album is an excellent showcase for Brown's genius.

The first four tracks were recorded for both Metronome and Prestige in Stockholm on September 15, 1953. This was released as Quincy Jones - Stockholm Sweetnin' (Jones was the arranger and musical director of the session), and featured a large front line comprised of Brown and Art Farmer on trumpet, Ake Persson on trombone, Arne Domnerus on alto sax and clarinet and Lars Gullin on baritone sax. The rhythm section was led by Bengt Hallberg on piano with Gunnar Johnson on bass and Jack Noren on drums.

Tracks 5 through 9 are the out-of-print album titled Gil Evans/Tadd Dameron - The Arranger's Touch. They were recorded in NYC in a single session on June 11, 1953, and feature a large front line comprised of Clifford Brown and Idrees Sulieman on trumpet, Herb Mullins on trombone, Gigi Gryce on alto sax, Benny Golson on tenor sax and Oscar Estell on baritone sax. The rhythm sectrion is Tadd Dameron on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums.
