4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Clifford Brown LP, don't let others dissuade you
Put this in perspective, when someone comes on here and starts spouting nonsense that this is "mediocre" Brown, what exactly does that mean? Clifford Brown was one of the finest and most gifted musicians we ever saw, so on his worst day, he was fantastic. Come on and pay some respect where respect is due. Sure we have preferences, and that's fine brother, but don't...

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre Brown
This simply was not Brown's best work by a long shot. Try the Emarcy's with Roach first as they are supreme. Also, the Blue Note set is a great place to start. Leave this, and the "with strings" stuff for when you become such a Brownie fanatic that you have to have EVERYTHING.

Sure we have preferences, and that's fine brother, but don't knock greatness just 'cause you dig Brown-Roach better.

To be sure, there isn't much that can compare of Brown with his Roach days. But one doesn't compare Brown-Roach to Brown and Helen Merrill do they? It's slightly different. Just know what you're in for and you won't be disappointed.

This is an excellent disc. It's one of my favorite Clifford Brown discs. I reach for it time and time again. It's smooth, flowing and never fails to please. You'll feel the same should you pick it up. And honestly, to the cat who mentioned it's only worth something to those out there who have to have everything CB ever did....once you start tapping into what Clifford Brown was laying down, you will HAVE to have everything he ever did. I guarantee it. So, might as well ante up now and get this one. You'll be getting the rest soon enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars wonderful and different glimpse of a trumpet great, November 17, 1998
This review is from: Memorial (Audio CD)
if Clifford Brown had lived, Miles Davis would have taken a back seat -- maybe. He showcases his technique, his melodic sense and his swing amazingly well on this disk -- the cuts with Dameron see him surrounded by excellent musicians -- e.g., Philly JJ, and the Sweden sides are also worthy. But the solos on Philly and Choose Now are astonishing for power, grace and tone...

Also, dig Brownie's chase choruses with Art Farmer on "Falling in Love with Love"!
