More About the Author

I'm a Unitarian Universalist minister -- humanistic in orientation and steeped in Natural Religion. Since 1983 I've been minister of the Unitarian Church of Hinsdale, IL, a suburb fifteen miles west of Chicago.

I studied American history as an undergraduate at the University of Delaware and as a graduate student at the University of Vermont. I received my theological training at McGill University's Faculty of Religious Studies in Montreal. I lived in Canada for six years and am forever nostalgic for that wonderful country and its civil people. I've been a Unitarian Universalist minister since 1977. Through 1983 I was minister of the First Unitarian Church of Youngstown, Ohio.

I favor back roads and small towns throughout America, urban strolls in Chicago neighborhoods, ethnic restaurants and country cafes, and vegetarian food. Influences include Emerson and Parker, Twain, Jung, Fromm and Frankl, Steinbech and Sinclair Lewis, J. W. Krutch and Hal Borland. I adore Debussy. The Maltese Falcon and Casablanca are my nominees for top movies, but in the right mood, I'll vote for Cinema Paradiso, and sometimes for Blade Runner. In my estimation, James Lee Burke is a much underestimated American author and Ross Lockridge, Jr.s 1947, Raintree County, is the great American novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Assistance, November 28, 2004
This review is from: In Memoriam: A Guide to Modern Funeral and Memorial Services (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
If you have ever attended a funeral or memorial service and come away disappointed because you thought it was inappropriate or that the deceased would have hated it, then this book can help. As its title states, it really does provide a guide to selecting the type of ceremony you want. And because it was published by the Unitarian Universalists, it provides a wide range of religious options.

5.0 out of 5 stars In Memoriam by Edward Searle, November 14, 2008
This review is from: In Memoriam: A Guide to Modern Funeral and Memorial Services (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
I work for a funeral home and am sometimes called upon to perform memorial services for people without a church or clergy person. This book is very helpful because it contains several complete services that can be customized to fit any situation. This would be a great book for clergy and funeral professionals as well as family members hoping for a more personal and creative service.

I was helping to plan a do-it-yourself memorial service for a person in the Unitarian-Universalist tradition. This book provided great background information as well as a selection of interesting services for inspiration. Our service came off flawlessly because we had prepared and this book was a great tool in helping us to do that.
