5.0 out of 5 stars The true testimony of one man's struggles to improve Afghanistan's future with the tools of science and technology, August 6, 2005
This review is from: Memories of Afghanistan (Paperback)
First published in 1981, and now in a new second edition containing portions of the manuscript not present in the first edition, Memories of Afghanistan is the true testimony of one man's struggles with a handful of like-minded individuals to improve Afghanistan's future with the tools of science and technology. Growing up penniless, he became reform-minded and tried to help his nation on the road to democracy and better treatment of women, but the monarchy threatened him with arrest and execution. In 1943 he had to flee the country for the sake of his life, and getting his wife out proved to be more difficult. A final chapter offers a brief summary of landmark political events in Afghanistan since, up through 2004. Memories of Afghanistan is in many ways a tragedy on a national scale - a tragedy of violence, of religious fervor that reduces women to the level of commodities, of internecine tribal warfare and hatred. And it is also powerfully vibrant, remembering the struggles, ideals, and passions of those who longed to make their home nation a better place to live. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars "real life in silence" all I remember of Afghanistan, March 23, 2008
This review is from: Memories of Afghanistan (Paperback)
This book is one that talks about majority of Afghans who kept silence to survive. Only one group of people " mohamadzaie"s were given the power and rights to do what they want to do but majority, especially "Tajiks" and other minorities had to struggle with daily basics to live. Low or no income, no job, not social welfare.
People took care of each other under the name of Islam. Zahir's kingdom was run by his family and uncles.
M. A. Anwar's story is one of our stories. It touches all of us since we see our selves in many of situations that is mentioned in this book. He had to leave everything behind and never return where he love and where he lived all his childhood. What a story. But remember, this was our real lives.
