5.0 out of 5 stars A must for every 50s country music fan & Skeeter Davis buff, July 13, 1998
This review is from: Memories (Audio CD)
Outstanding!! For years I refused to buy a CD player and then somebody released the complete works of the Davis Sisters on CD - then I HAD to have one. This is a superb collection - lots of wonderful vocals by Skeeter and Betty Jack - and the big surprise, the tracks where Georgia Davis replaced Betty Jack are also top notch!! It comes with a wonderful little booklet on the Davis Story. If you love Skeeter Davis, you can't afford to be without this collection!!t.t

5.0 out of 5 stars The Davis Sisters: Historical Powerhouse, August 31, 2000
This review is from: Memories (Audio CD)
Thanks to Bear Family Records, The Davis Sisters are finally getting their due! Betty Jack Davis and Mary Frances Pinick, (better known as Skeeter Davis) are finally exposed for what they really were... gifted! Within this package you'll hear the one-of-a-kind harmony that inspired the likes of The Everly Brothers and the Beatles. You'll hear the outstanding vocals of Betty Jack (B.J.) on solos that not only thrill but at the same time sadden, because of her early death in an automobile accident. Truly, hers is a talent lost on more than one generation. This glimps of what she could have been is worth the price of the package.

These gals were highly influential during an era when the mighty male ruled the music industry. One listen and you'll know that the current music scene owes a big debt to The Davis Sisters.

Skeeter Davis is now doing a lot of Southern Gospel music since turning her life towards Christ, but back in the early fifties Skeeter was singing with BJ Davis (BJ was her nick-name)and the music that they put out was some of the best country ever recorded. The first time I ever heard them do "Foggy Mountain Top" was back in the sixties on an old LP, but that one song which is still a favorite of mine today ,introduced me to a true Country legend known as the Davis Sisters. Grant it I always thought that Skeeter was Great by herself and there are songs that I feel no one in Nashville could duplicate like "Busfare to Kentucky",but when she was teamed up with BJ before her death in '53 they made a huge mark on the Country Music Trade. These two girls recorded what me and many others concider the real country sound that it was meant to be ,not this modern garbage that so many people in left field concider country with some half baked, half naked female laying on a make shift bed singing to some sleeze in a worthless music video !Theres plenty of trash out there being passed of as "Country",but if you are looking for some of the real stuff that put Country and Western on the map this set is a must! Every song is a good one with some real classics. If your looking for some B-Girl with her belly button hanging out then turn on the CMT channel, but if you are interested in real country roots music get this set as it is worth every penny!(and you won't be ashamed to share it with your grandchildren) "ENJOY"

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Harmony, July 15, 2010

This review is from: Memories (Audio CD)
The Davis Sisters, who weren't really sisters but were the best of friends, were a duo who played guitar and sang in harmony in that sweet 1950s hillbilly way. Skeeter, whose real name was Mary Frances Penick, and Betty Jack Davis were the original duo, but when B.J. died she was replaced by Betty's sister, Georgie. The Davis Sisters wrote most of their own songs and after the duo split, Skeeter Davis went on to have a successful solo career into the 1970s, and is now mostly remembered for her big pop hit "The End of the World."

"Memories" is a full 2-cd set on Bear Family Records and contains 60 tracks recorded between 1952 and 1956 including "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels," "Sorrow and Pain," and their versions of the Hank Williams tunes "Your Cheatin' Heart," "Jambalaya," and "Kaw-Liga." The most upbeat of the selections include "Gotta Git A-Goin'," "Rag Mop," and my favorite "Rock-A-Bye Boogie."

If you enjoy old school country, hillbilly, and rockabilly from the 1950s you owe it to yourself to check out the Davis Sisters.
