Book Description

Do you believe in second chances at love?

Michael DeCara came home from the Vietnam War a wounded man, both physically and emotionally. He tried putting his life back together, but found civilian life difficult after all he'd experienced in Nam. Raising his young daughter, Vanessa, by himself after his wife left, he found it difficult to commit to one job or one woman for any length of time. Then he met a young woman who made him feel good about himself again and who fell in love with Vanessa as well. But then a life-changing event occurred and he had to choose between his past and the present. He chose to leave without a word to the young woman, believing he was doing what was best for her. Now, years later, she has walked back into his life and he believes they may have a second chance at love-except she hates him and he doesn't understand why.

Danielle Westerly fell in love when she was only eighteen and her heart was broken when he left her without a word. Her heartache was increased when she made a fateful decision that would alter her future, and she blamed him for her loss. Years later, she is single and has built up a successful career when she accidently runs into the man who was responsible for her past pain. Yet, their chemistry is undeniable. Can Dani give up her anger and let go of the pain of the past and fall in love again with the man she has hated all these years?

Dani and Michael share a journey of heartache, loss and painful memories that threaten to keep them apart. Can they break past these and finally find love again?

5.0 out of 5 stars Nicholas Sparks could not have done better... March 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the second of Deanna Lynn Sletten's books that I have read, and I have nothing but praise for her. Not only does she have an excellent writing style, she is not afraid to take on the tough subjects. In this book, it is Vietnam vets and the shabby way they were treated when they came home. In her book Widow, Virgin, Whore, it is AIDS. She deftly crafts her words so that we are totally engaged with the characters-- how their past has led to their present, and where they go from here.

Though the ending of this book seemed inevitable to me at the outset, it did not end at all like I had expected-- and I could not put it down till I was finished. Yes, it is a very emotional book-- keep the tissues handy-- but read this book! You will be glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-Read Love Story February 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Memories is a well-told dramatic tale of love lost and love found. At first glance, the ending seems obvious, but there are unexpected twists and turns along the way. Be prepared to laugh and cry as you get to know the characters and share in their lives.

In addition to a great storyline, I also enjoyed the vivid setting descriptions. For example:
The morning sun peeked through the edges of the curtains and spread its warm long fingers...
The crisp winter breeze nipped at Dani's face...
January placed its icy fingers over Minnesota...
The soft sound of the waves lapping against the beach was the only music present...

Although Memories opens with a funeral (So, this is what it all comes down to... A prayer, a handful of dirt and a single rose.), it is a story full of life and love that you won't want to miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life is only memories April 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Life is the amount of memories we collect through the years, and this books is the perfect example of it. This is a story about love, forgiveness, family, sorrow, grief, it will be simple to say that is a story about life, but this is not a simple story. It's one of the best stories you will ever read.

This book leads us throught the path of two people destined to find themselves more than once during their lives. A story that show us how every decision we make affects us and others, and determined who we are.

The book presents us to Danielle and Michael (or Miguel) in a moment of their lifes when they think they have grown up, and that the past is just a memory. But when they met again all the past resurges and we discovered what happened eighteen years ago. Then, during the course of the months we see the comes and goes of their relationship. And like everything in lifes, it doesn't come easy.

A man who is a Veteran of Vietnam and a girl who helps him faces his demons, a girl that was the only woman capable of truly understanding him.

Deanna has the great ability of describe characters with such deepness that you really feel you know them. You cry and laugh along them, and feel everything they face. Every dialogue, every scene is described in an excellent way! She really know how to make a girl cry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warmhearted + Gut wrenching = Terrific love story July 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really liked Memories but I have to warn any future readers to have a box of tissues handy when you start reading. I didn't and I had to interrupt reading the story (which was a bummer) in order to search for some. That being said, it will come as no surprise that I found the story to be emotionally gripping. The writing style was practically lyrical; unfortunately the editing was not very good. Nevertheless, the mistakes did not spoil the story for me.

This story dealt not only with the passionate, romantic love shared by Dani and Michael (Miguel); it also dealt with family love which was exemplified in Michael's and Dani's love for his daughter, Vanessa and his granddaughter, Michelle. In addition, one of the issues dealt with in this book was the love between friends which is shown most strongly when Michael and Dani visit The Wall in Washington, D.C. to honor his best friend who was killed in Vietnam right in front of him.

All the characters, both major and minor, had multi-faceted and well-developed personalities and the dialogues were authentic and enjoyable to read (especially the banter between Dani and Miguel). The imagery was graphic and realistic; I really felt immersed in the story.

Overall, I think this was a wonderful reading experience and I definitely recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A love story July 9, 2012
Format:Paperback
The book begins as a woman stands at her husband's funeral, reminiscing over their marriage. Then it jumps back to when they met eighteen years before. But this wasn't the first time they had met. So the story of their first meeting is interwoven into the second story.
Michael wasn't the same after returning from Vietnam War. He jumped from woman to woman until he finally found a woman who could understand. But then when tragedy strikes he abandons her. Years later Danielle and Michael meet again and must learn to forgive and forget the past in order to move forward.

The story is written in such a way that the reader knows how it will end. There are no surprises. This was alternately good and bad. I didn't really like knowing that he was going to die from the very beginning. It set a rather sad tone to the book. The love story was beautiful, but since the book was about getting to the love story it was mostly filled with conflict and misunderstanding. I would rather have read more of their story instead of how they got to their story. The character development was good. I found myself liking the characters and getting frustrated with their many attempts to connect. It was a sweet book that I enjoyed reading. The blub in the back of the book about her next book was intriguing enough that I want to read it was well.

I received this book free of charge in exchange for my honest review.
