This is going to be a great series..., February 27, 2006
This review is from: Memories of a Dirt Road Town (Horse Dreams Trilogy, Book 1) (Paperback)
Develyn is an interesting character with a boring life, a nosy best friend, and an estranged daughter. She wants adventure, but not too much. So what does she do? She impulsively decides to return to Wyoming--to a place she enjoyed as a child, hoping to recoup some of the emotion from that childhood experiece. What does she find? Tons of diversions from her goal, scary scenarios, and plenty of adventure. Her new girlfriend is a quirky character with very little tact. Three cowboys are enamored with Develyn almost immediately, and she finds herself drawn to one man in particular. However, I could see as time when on that she started seeing the good things in the other men, too. I'm thinking as the series continues that she may change her mind more than once. And poor Develyn had so many mishaps with horses taking off on her and bucking her, I'm surprised she hadn't developed a phobia. The story was enjoyable and I recommend it. I've never read a book by Stephen Bly before, but my husband loved his writing, so I gave it a try. I would have given this novel five stars, but I felt like it ended too soon, and kind of abruptly. Fortunately, I have the sequel in my hot little hands. Off to read The Mustang Breaker...

A fun and touching read, June 15, 2005
This review is from: Memories of a Dirt Road Town (Horse Dreams Trilogy, Book 1) (Paperback)
This book was a fun read as well as touching. It has characters that just seem to come to life. The interaction between them was great. Develyn, the main character, needed to get away due to circumstances in her life that have left her feeling that she needs to find some peace and direction. She decides to visit a place in Wyoming that she and her family visited when she was just 10. During her stay out west, she makes friends and not just the human kind. She draws closer to God through all of this. She does have an adventure while in Wyoming, fast horses, 4-wheelers & guns. I'm never disappointed in Stephen Bly's books.

Memories of a Dirt Road Town, September 21, 2005
This review is from: Memories of a Dirt Road Town (Horse Dreams Trilogy, Book 1) (Paperback)
Great Bly Book! This is exactly what you'd expect from Stephen Bly. Funny, hidden humor also, well written, and of course, the message of God's love and understanding heart which is offered to all of us. Very good book. Would, and have, recommend to anyone.

Solid writing, living characters, July 26, 2005
This review is from: Memories of a Dirt Road Town (Horse Dreams Trilogy, Book 1) (Paperback)
For a long time now Stephen Bly has been my favorite author and this latest book is just another example of why. Mr. Bly's writing makes you feel as if you are apart of the story and with each book in a series you feel as if you were visiting old friends. His books are heartwarming and humorous, living and breathing the spirit of the west. I can't wait for the next book in this series!

Beautiful Story!, October 26, 2010
This review is from: Memories of a Dirt Road Town (Horse Dreams Trilogy, Book 1) (Paperback)
This was my first Stephen Bly book and I was totally taken in with his writing right from the beginning. He is witty and funny and creates great characters but most importantly, he reminds us of God's love for us and His understanding that we are sinners who strive each and every day to do His will. In this story, Develyn Worrell is a widowed forty-five-year-old fifth grade school teacher from central Indiana. Her 22-year-old daughter, Delaney, is estranged from her because she feels Develyn's lack of forgiveness contributed to her father's sudden heart attack. With school being out for the summer and feeling lonely and out of sorts, Develyn decides to load up the car and drive to Wyoming from Indiana. When Develyn was ten, she and her family had vacationed in a small central Wyoming town and she decides to head there for the summer in hopes of recreating the experience she enjoyed so much on that vacation 35 years previously. What Develyn finds is not only her past, but her present and future as well. The cast of characters that help her along the way play a big part in helping her grow in herself and in her trust of God. I'll definitely be looking for more of Stephen Bly's books and would recommend this one to everyone!

--, April 17, 2009
This review is from: Memories of a Dirt Road Town (Horse Dreams Trilogy, Book 1) (Paperback)
Develyn Worrell is a fifth grade Indiana school teacher, divorced and later widowed, with one twenty-year-old daughter, Delaney. Delaney isn't talking to her mother because she is blaming her father's fatal heart attack on Develyn. With her summer empty, Develyn decides to revisit her past, the only place that has ever given her peace--a small town in Wyoming. But Develyn doesn't remember the name of the town. In spite of her best friend's misgivings, Develyn heads west. As soon as she arrives in Wyoming, a cowboy invites her to a wild horse auction. Develyn refuses, hoping to find the town she's hunting, even though she still doesn't remember the name. In a series of bizarre events, Develyn does find her town, and oddly enough, it is the same place where the wild horse auction is taking place. With three cowboys pursuing her, can Develyn still find the peace she remembers as well as mend the relationship with her daughter? MEMORIES OF A DIRT ROAD TOWN is rather a quirky read. Develyn is a lovable character, but for a forty-five year old school teacher, she acted lost, young, and irresponsible. She seemed to have an unusual ability to make "best friends" easily, from waitresses in a twenty-four hour café to barrel racers at a rodeo. Some of the events that took place seemed rather contrived, but in spite of these . . . or maybe because of these . . . the book is adorable and easy to read. MEMORIES OF A DIRT ROAD TOWN is the first book in the Horse Dreams series. Readers will not want to miss it, and will be anxiously waiting for book two in the series. [...]

Horse Dreams Trilogy, Book 1 review, February 2, 2009
This review is from: Memories of a Dirt Road Town (Horse Dreams Trilogy, Book 1) (Paperback)
I read the second book in this trilogy first and enjoyed it so much that I had to order the 1st and 3rd. The second book was the best, it moved along very fast and had a lot of energy. The only problem that I had with the whole trilogy was that all of this took place in one summer! Come on, no one gets up everyday and has an adventure, everyday! All 3 books were good but the second one was the best.

Horse Dreams Trilogy Book 1, November 23, 2008
This review is from: Memories of a Dirt Road Town (Horse Dreams Trilogy, Book 1) (Paperback)
I bought these three books in the series for a young girl who is very romantic about cowboys and living on a ranch. She liked them a lot. I would say the reading level would be pre-teen, and they are sort of "cowboy romances".

Memories of a dirt road town, August 10, 2008
This review is from: Memories of a Dirt Road Town (Horse Dreams Trilogy, Book 1) (Paperback)
A friend handed me this book that she found at the library. She said that she just couldnt put it down. I started reading and in the first chapter felt so so about it. Then the trip started and so did the whole personality of the book! I had to recheck the name of the author because no way could a man relate to the kind of feeling that I was getting from this wonderful book. It was like someone whispered in his ear. The book would not let me go and I was reading it with the fire crackling and the cats sleeping here and there. I laughed out loud several times and that is unusual for me. Scared the cats pretty bad on a few outright belly laughs. You just couldnt stop smiling.
