5.0 out of 5 stars Duke = Aloha, Aloha = Duke..., March 28, 2000

This review is from: Memories of Duke: The Legend Comes to Life: Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, 1890-1968 (Paperback)
Revealing interviews, as well as many never before published photographs, allow "Memories of Duke" to show the reader know what a better place the world is for having had Duke Kahanamoku in it, and takes the edge off the bitter-sweet sorrow of not having known the man in person. The research done by Ms. Hall and veteran surfing reporter Ambrose is amazing, and the result well deserves the high praise given it by Duke's widow Nadine, (who wrote the foreword) and family and friends of Duke who say the book captured him as he really was. Has received awards from Okekai for Hawaii-Japanese Friendship, and the Hawaii Publishers Association. Considered to be a "must" for any library collection by the Friends of the Hawaii State Library, I add to that my insistence that no collection of Hawaiiana or surfing will be complete until this book is part of it. Mahalo nui loa to Hall and Ambrose for their fine work.

3.0 out of 5 stars great pictures and quotes, February 25, 1999
This review is from: Memories of Duke: The Legend Comes to Life: Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, 1890-1968 (Paperback)
Memories of Duke is a great book to find out about Duke Kahanamoku. In this book there are many pictures of Duke from his first swim at Alakea Slip in 1911 to his death in 1968. The book is broken very nicely into five sections. Each section represents a different aspect of his life. For instance, one chapter on swimming, surfing, ambassador, etc. This book is filled with quotes from people who knew Duke or Newspaper articles. This book is just an organization of Duke's life. I think that it could have been better if the authors added more of their views instead of everybody elses. Other wise this book is a great book to own.
