Review

John Hartford was one of the rarest of musical birds. He had one foot deeply rooted in the past and the other always at least a few steps into the future- and both were dancing. --Larry Groce, Mountain Stage

A terrific recollection of Johns work from an authentic group of connected musicians. You can feel his presence on all the songs. Singable songs that shouldn't be forgotten.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Absolute Best John Hartford CD!!! June 6, 2010
Format:Audio CD
If you liked John Hartford's music and style, this is the CD for you! A wonderful tribute to John by members of his band (Chris Sharp, Mike Compton...) who stayed true to John's style! This is truly a gem! Your collection will NOT be complete without it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Gold! January 4, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
As a John Hartford fan I don't know how or why I missed this.

I was surprised with "new" John Hartford tracks (previously unrecorded - ready for his unpublished CD that didn't get made because of his death) sprinkled in with his String Band and friends re-recordings of their favorite Hartford songs. This is something that I will treasure.

I saw John only a couple of times in person, but this brings back memories of all the fun and wonderful humor that John had.

I now see why this was named one of the best bluegrass albums when it came out in 2010.

If you like John Hartford, or bluegrass with humor, you'll love this CD. It's awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tons of fun, John would have loved it June 22, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I'm a huge John Hartford fan, though I learned about him late and never saw him live. While I am also a fan of Bob Carlin on banjo, for some reason it took me about a year to buy Memories of John. Maybe because Hartford himself wasn't on it?

I was wrong - Hartford, via clips, is "on" the album, and Memories of John is terrific. The Hartford String Band is top notch, the special guests are artists I haven't found fault with yet (like Tim O'Brien - love nearly everything he does, and Bela Fleck, banjo genius). More than anything, the record is, in classic John Hartford fashion, FUN (though Lorena is lovely and wistful, as it was when John recorded it on Gum Tree Canoe).
