Editorial Reviews

The recordings presented here are from the Sons Of The Pioneers radio show "The Lucky U Ranch".All members of the group get their chance to shine, with some fine solo singing from Lloyd Perryman, Ken Curtis and Tommy Doss. Shug Fisher is given his head on the novelty "Too Old To Cut The Mustard", and Hugh Farr not only gives a virtuoso fiddle display on four numbers, he also acquits himself admirably on the sensitive "Thought For The Day" track. A selection of Bob Nolan songs get a good outing, not least the Sons Of The Pioneers theme song, "Tumbling Tumbleweeds", but don t be fooled by "Little Annie Rooney".Original member Tim Spencer is recalled with his beautiful "Room Full Of Roses" and the joint composition "Blue Prairie". This CD is a reminder of what they sounded like half-a-century ago, the way millions of people would have heard them through their radio sets, and if the technical quality of the sound is slightly wanting in places, the Sons are revealed as a consummately entertaining and professional ensemble. The Sons Of The Pioneers have become a much-deserved American institution. Founded in the early 1930s and originally including Roy Rogers, they have won the hearts of millions with their harmonious mix of Cowboy and Country songs, many of which were written by original member Bob Nolan. The recordings presented here are from their 1950s radio show The Lucky U Ranch , nationally broadcast from Hollywood every weekday, featuring Lloyd Perryman, Tommy Doss, Ken Curtis and Betty Taylor, with a guest appearance by Bob Nolan. The generous, almost 75 minute, playing time will revive memories of their warmth, sincerity and humour. See also: JASMCD3602/3 - Let's Go West

There just aren't enough stars to tell people how much I enjoyed this collection.

Jasmine has done a great job putting these radio transcriptions together. Not the usual "Sons" fare, but in some ways perhaps typical of their work, with a mix of vocal, (with the famous Sons harmony) instrumental and comedy all mixed together.
