"Memories Are Made of This" is a beautifully packaged 8-CD set that provides a detailed overview of Dean Martin's early recordings. Admittedly, not all the songs are gems, but the obscure singles from the late 1940s reveal a self-assured vocalist whose style was truly his own. In retrospect, Dino was a more versatile singer than Frank Sinatra - he could perform Italian love songs, country, jazz, blues and pop standards. When listening to Martin's version of "I Don't Care If the Sun Don't Shine," you can hear some of the vocal stylings that Elvis Presley would utilize in his remake at Sun Records. The duets with Peggy Lee and Nat King Cole are priceless, but the same cannot be said for the irritating novelty recordings with Jerry Lewis. Apart from the title track, perhaps the best song in the collection is Dino's stirring interpretation of "Come Back to Sorrento." If you're a Martin fan with only a few of his CDs, you will save a lot of money if you purchase this box set. The Bear Family has done a masterful job in restoring Dean Martin to his proper place in the history of popular music.

Co-producing this box set on Dean Martin for the Bear Family Label was a wonderful experience. Like everything else the Bear Family produces, nothing is left out. Detail is given to making this set absolutely complete. Supplied from my own private collection are the early recordings on Embassy, as well as Apollo and Diamond. Every detail is given to the Capitol tracks from the original sources and masters. Also included is a full color hard-bound book with a complete discography, filled with photographs and sections on Dean's motion pictures. Also a absolutely great biography by historian John Chintala. This box set is a must for every Dean Martin fan! "Return to Me" (Also on the Bear Label) is a continuation of the same. I thought a lot about buying this because of the price, but now that I have it in my hot little hands, I wish I would have bought it sooner. I love it -- I have now put the other box sets on my "list"!

Dean is truly my all time favorite singer and I adore his older recordings. You can't find a better collection.

Highly recommended. Audio quality is great (with obvious allowances for some tracks given the source material). Also includes the old movie songs.

Bear Family is the most amazing label in the world, and they've finally turned their sights on the great Dino. It's about time. Dean's ten times the artist Elvis ever was, and this set contains everything -- EVERYTHING! -- that he recorded in the early years of his career, from those impossible-to-find Apollo and Diamond 78s to all of his work on Capitol up to about 1956. Plus tons of radio stuff. It's AWESOME.

This is the best Dean Martin collection money can buy! When I first listened to it some of the songs were not so great, but the more I listen the more I like every single song. Just remember to turn the radio down when Jerry sings, if you don't you could hurt your ears! lol

I love this Box set! All my favorite Dino songs plus all of his songs from the Martin & Lewis movies...the awesome rendition of thats Amore, with Jerry Lewis I LOVE THAT VERSION!!!

The novelty records with Jerry Lewis highlight this awesome collection of Dean Martin's early recordings, If you ever get a chance, buy this set, you will not be disappointed, All the songs he sang in the movies with Jerry Lewis are here, plus most of the studio cuts of the same songs...
