Editorial Reviews

2013 release, the second studio album from highly regarded writer/singer/multi-instrumentalists Tim O'Brien and Darrell Scott. Comprising five songs apiece from O'Brien and Scott plus one memorable collaboration in their timely 'Turn Your Dirty Lights On,' along with a pair of chestnuts from Hank Williams and George Jones and a spirited rendition of the John Prine classic 'Paradise,' with its author guesting on guitar and vocals, Memories & Moments is a face-to-face record by design.

Great instrumentals and fantastic vocals.

The production is elegant in it's simplicity; the songs are well constructed with the lyrics and music well integrated, and it is just a great piece of work.

Yes, it has been 13 years since Tim O'Brien and Darrell Scott released "Real Time," which to this day is one of my desert island albums. Tim is the quintessential bluegrass singer, with a perfectly weathered voice, not to mention the ability to play anything with strings. Darrell Scott's voice is a completely different kind of perfect, and while it may be less distinctive than Tim's, his instrumental prowess is on another level entirely. The thing is, they can both do everything. So, why bother putting them together? Isn't that just a recipe for clashing egos and disaster? "Real Time" definitively answered that question. When the two all-around geniuses are Tim O'Brien and Darrell Scott, the results are epic. Real Time was the perfect distillation of everything that is great about bluegrass, old-time and folk music. I still get chills every time I hear their harmonizing, their perfectly restrained instrumental interplay without a single missing or extra note, and the raw emotion.

And then they went their separate ways. I remember going to their solo concerts, and with these types of artists, you can always chat with them after the show. At Tim's shows, I begged him to record with Darrell again, and at Darrell's shows, I asked if he had anything going with Tim. And I was never the only one. Eventually, they gave in. Last year, they put out some live recordings they had been sitting on. Naturally, they were revelatory. Somehow, Tim's voice gets even better with an audience, and when Darrell cuts loose on stage with that innovative guitar style he uses when there isn't a rhythm section around, the results lived up to expectations. But I wanted some new material. Finally, 13 years after Real Time, they have delivered.

Just got this album today. Actually my wife recommended it and bought it for me. Got it into my phone and listened while mowing the lawn. It's been a long time since I've mowed the lawn and sang out loud. I bet everyone in the neighborhood thought a wild animal was dying. This is a really pure album. Great instrumentals and fantastic vocals. I liked it so much I just ordered their other album that they did fifteen years ago. Guys, please, stop whatever you are doing and go back into the studio and record another album or ten.

As a longtime follower of both artists work, this long overdue CD meets every expectation! Darrell Scott and Tim O'Brien are musicians and songwriters of the same outstanding quality. Even more so, their blended effort surpasses their solo work. Their almost dreamlike interaction on instruments and voice is breathtaking, the songs soar high above the mediocrity of todays mainstream.
An instant classic!

A wonderful collection of songs by two masters. Tim and Darrell's voices blend together as well as any of the great brother singing duos. The original songs are memorable as are the well chosen covers of songs written by George Jones, Hank Williams and John Prine. "Keep Your Dirty Lights On", "Brother Wind", and "Time to Talk to Joseph" are highlights. And I find myself listening again and again to the haunting "Angel's Blue Eyes", a finely crafted tune with beautiful harmonies and evocative lyrics.

It's one thing to be a world class musician, but applying that talent to spontaneous performance in a studio setting is something else entirely. For their second formal collaboration, Tim O'Brien and Darrell Scott perform rather than produce - the recordings catch them in the act of making music, rather than making a record. Sitting face-to-face for most of these tracks, they pick and sing for one another rather than for the microphones, and the results contain the essence of duet music. There's an interplay between their instruments and voices, provocations made and instantly answered, that are often still-born or sterilized by the process of recording. But such is the nature of their collaboration, which began with 2000's Real Time and which grew in countless career intersections.

Last year's We're Usually a Lot Better Than This, showed how quickly and easily the duo could come together in live performance, and how the element of surprise could spur great stage performances. Their latest, built from new solo material, a co-write and a few covers, shows how empathetic each is to the other's instrumental and vocal traits. There are few others who could pull together such performances this nuanced and riveting in just three days. O'Brien and Scott sound as if they're singing well-worn folk songs they'd been touring for years, when in fact the original material is new. They conjure George Jones' spirit with their harmony runs on the possum's sad-sack "Just One More Time" and are joined by John Prine for his own "Paradise." Waiting thirteen years is one way to avoid the sophomore jinx; hopefully these two will get to junior year a bit more quickly. [©2013 Hyperbolium]
