5.0 out of 5 stars Great light read.....
This book had me on quite the roller-coaster ride of emotions. It is extremely easy to follow and understand. It gives the reader insight of what is really important in life while adding much needed knowledge of ones feelings and medical wellbeing.

I purchased this book hoping to relate to another person who lost his or her sister suddenly. I realize that her sister passed within months of her illness, but she watched her sister deteriorate and was not "sudden." I also felt that her frustration of trying to help her sister and her helplessness came off as arrogance. I have recently lost my sister who was in her early 30's. She went to the hospital with what she felt was the flu and died within an hour of being in the hospital. I was hoping this book related more to my situation where a loved one passed completely unexpectedly and within hours or even days of being sick. My grief is very new and fresh. Reading it later in my grieving process may give me a different take on things, but for now, I was not impressed and it did not console me the way I was hoping.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend, October 17, 2010
This review is from: Memories Of My Sister: Dealing with Sudden Death (Paperback)
This is an easy read book. I was touched by the heartfelt emotion expressed dealing with her sister's sudden death, finishing it in one day. I especially liked the way the author used this experience to teach others about grief with practical ways to recognize grief and heal, and how she includes a chapter on self health advocacy with easy to understand approaches to medical professionals to communicate health issues. A must read for everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Compelling Story!, March 15, 2002

I heard about Ms. Rener's book after a discussion with a friend about her husbands misfortunate experience at the doctor's office. He has been misdiagnosed and having a difficult time with his treatments. My interest in the book was purely an interest in helping my friend's husband with self-advocacy in health. But, after reading the story of Ms. Rener's sister I found myself compelled to read all of the book. What a wonderful tribute to her late sister and a wealth of knowledge to any reader. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Take Responsibility for Your Own Health Care NOW!, March 5, 2002

How often we do what the doctor tells us because he/she is the authority figure and we're the passive subject! Let Linda Rener's cautionary tale about her sister's frightening, avoidable decline and death be a lesson to us all as we learn to be self-advocates in our own health care and that of our families. A sad story, but never maudlin or bitter. A "how-to" book that could save lives!

5.0 out of 5 stars Proactiveness in Health Care: A Must Today!, February 22, 2002
This review is from: Memories Of My Sister: Dealing with Sudden Death (Paperback)
I do grief counseling and a patient of mine gave me a copy of Linda's book. I was amazed at the simplicity, directness, and accuracy of Linda's writings! The story of Judy is just another example of our health care system gone wrong. The chapter on proactiveness in health care is an excellent addition to this self-help book. A must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sensitive & informative, January 6, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Memories Of My Sister: Dealing with Sudden Death (Paperback)
Ms. Rener writes on a subject that has or will touch all of us at some time in life. The death of a loved one is never easy. Beginning with a poignent and deeply personal discussion of her own experiences and continuing with the stages of grief, the book helps us to see that we are not alone in our feelings and that what we are going thru is normal. It concludes with information to help all of us be more informed medical consumers. I think it is clear and well written and would wholeheartedly recommend it for those looking for books on this very sensitive subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Memories of my sister: dealing with sudden death, January 4, 2002

I really liked this book! It is conversational and written in a manner that I can understand. The story of her sister is very sad and made me cry. I haven't lost anyone close to me and yet I still found the book helpful. I especially liked the self-advocate part of the book. Dealing with doctors and insurance companies is a nightmare and the author gave some very good tips towards dealing with denied insurance claims. I also liked the part about dealing with doctors. The sample questions that you can ask your doctor was very helpful.

After the tragedy of September 11, this is a must read book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing--So honest!, July 5, 2002
By
This review is from: Memories Of My Sister: Dealing with Sudden Death (Paperback)
This book is such an honest, incredible book based on one woman's struggles to overcome her sister's death. Ms. Rener writes this book to tell the story of her loss, and to assist others in coping with the grief of the death of a loved one. However, never does she preach, or tell one how to act...she tells of her mistakes, and suggests certain ways that may be best for tackling specific situations. Although this book is about losing loved ones and coping, I would certainly recommend this to anyone--whether you, personally, are dealing with death, or if a friend needs guidance with a loss in their life.
