Not your everyday oldies compilation,
By
This review is from: Memories Are Still Made Of Hits Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
Sequel records of the U.K. has gathered together a generous 26 tracks of tunes reaching back as far as the late 50's and fast forwarding well into the 70's in this collection of songs seldom found elsewhere. While many of the included tracks were even bigger hits in England, every tune here was a top-100 charting single in the U.S.
What makes this compilation far more interesting is the inclusion of so many tracks that are almost never found on other collections - single artist or various. Starting with the novelty "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor" from 1959, this eclectic compilation reaches as far as John Travolta's 1976 singing career attempt top-10 "Let Her In". Sandwiched in between are diverse rarities such as the Sapphires' "Gotta Have Your Love", the Sounds Orchestral's instrumental "Canadian Sunset", Austin Roberts' "Something's Wrong With Me" and Daniel Boone's "Run Tell The People". Sound quality is decent overall with many tracks (2,4,6,10,13,15-17,19-26) in stereo, the remainder in mono. A paragraph of background info on each of the included tracks makes up the liner notes booklet. Sequel has done a respectable job here along the lines of Ace's "American Rock and Roll" series. This would be a interesting series to follow through with more volumes but with the reorganization of Sequel under the Castle label umbrella, it looks like this is it for the series, unfortunately.

This one has become a favorite CD of mine....so many good songs performed by the original hit artists! And even those songs and/artists I wasnt familiar with, turn out to be very listenable as well.....and some, once I heard the song, were like....Oh, yeah...I do remember that one now that I hear it!!
A prime example is Girl Dont Come by Sandy Shaw. It WAS a hit here in the U>S> but I'd forgotten until I heard it again after 35 or so years. Wow, it is a great tune...and timeless, too. There are plenty of other great listening songs here. I recommend this CD highly! |
