5.0 out of 5 stars Another 5 star winner from Marcia Willett
A beautiful story of love, loss and friendship, set in beautiful English surroundings. I loved how the main characters meet and decide to help each other and share their lives. The story is written and told beautifully. Fortunately, though tragedy occurs, it even makes the story more poignant and I just couldn't put it down. Good ending for all those readers who like...

Lucy Faringdon has spent over 50 years grieving for the father who killed his best friend and then ran away with his friend's wife. Traumatized by the events of an emotional night at Bridge House on the edge of Exmoor, Lucy flees but never recovers from what she saw. A generation later, her son Jonah meets Clio, a young woman whose history is inextricably linked to his and with whom he will uncover the events that led to that passionate night that changed his mother's life forever.

Marcia Willett lays the groundwork for a tale of what a child saw and what actually occurred. She poignantly illustrates how war touches us all, whether we are away fighting or at home: lives are battered or destroyed, and loves and loyalties are put to the test.

You will meet Hester, the aging matriarch of Bridge House, soon to be turned out by the two relatives who want the money from the sale of the house, her long-secret love Blaise, now a retired priest, and be propelled into that long ago night during World War II when Edward, Eleanor, and Michael meet in an explosive triangle with long-lasting repercussions.

At times a bit overly dramatic and with characters not quite as appealing as those of her previous books, this is still an enjoyable tale for fans of Marcia Willett and her atmospheric English stories.

The story is written and told beautifully. Fortunately, though tragedy occurs, it even makes the story more poignant and I just couldn't put it down. Good ending for all those readers who like good endings. Marcia Willett is a great writer and will remind readers of Rosamunde Pilcher and Mauve Binchey. Once you read one of her books, you'll want to read them all.

As always I am left with a sense of peace and longing to go to England and visit the areas Willett writes about. Her stories are always so delightful, this one no exception.
