now THIS is music !!!,
By Matthew G. Sherwin (last seen screaming at Amazon customer service) - See all my reviews (TOP 100 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Memories: Very Best of (Audio CD)
Memories: The Very Best of the Lettermen gives us quite a few terrific hits by The Lettermen. Sure, it may not be completely all their "very best;" but as a single CD goes this is a rather good retrospective. The sound quality is great and the artwork impresses me greatly.
The Lettermen start the CD with their sublime rendition of "When I Fall In Love;" "When I Fall In Love" shines like silver and gold when The Lettermen sing it! The Lettermen can truly harmonize along with the best of them and the musical arrangement is very lush. Next comes a medley of "Goin' Out Of My Head/Can't Take My Eyes Off You;" this live track demonstrates just how well The Lettermen could establish a great rapport with their adoring audiences and that's amazing. They sing and play "Goin' Out Of My Head/Can't Take My Eyes Off You" to perfection--and beyond! In addition, "The Way You Look Tonight" is a very pretty melody that I enjoy a lot; and The Lettermen take this one to new heights. Similarly, the theme from "A Summer Place" features great percussion and the woodwind instruments also enhance the natural beauty of the melody. The Lettermen deliver this with panache; and their rather sensitive treatment of this ballad is just terrific. "Put Your Head On My Shoulder" is equally wonderful; this is a major highlight of this album. "Silly Boy (She Doesn't Love You)" has another very sweet melody that belies the seriousness of the lyrics; this type of torch song is really very beautiful and it all works rather well. The strings are used to great advantage. "Sherry Don't Go" features The Lettermen front and center; they handle complicated key and tempo changes effortlessly. Of course, we know that this really wasn't all that easy--The Lettermen were extremely talented and they used their gift to make this look effortless. "Go Away Little Girl" sounds so sweet when The Lettermen croon this ballad right alongside the best of the crooners! The Lettermen never sounded better and that's OK by me! "Go Away Little Girl" is another major highlight of this album." Turn Around, Look At Me" also gets a very sensitive treatment from The Lettermen; and this is truly very special. The strings mark the beat and it all works very well. The album ends with a live medley from West Side Story; and this works marvelously. What a strong ending for the album! The Lettermen remain one of the best groups of the twentieth century. I highly recommend this for their fans; and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will love this album, too.

STILL LOVE THEIR HARMONY,
By Lindanc7@aol.com (Greensboro, North Carolina) - See all my reviews

I well remember THE LETTERMEN. Their good looks, performance appeal and wonderful harmony melted this high school girl's heart. I attended a concert in Greensboro, NC in 1965, sat on the front row and sang "Kansas City" with THEM. I loved them then and I still love them at my ripe "old age" of 51.
