Vampire Memories Book 4, December 13, 2011
This review is from: In Memories We Fear: A Vampire Memories Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
Eleisha and her companions are still searching for more vampires to bring into their fold and show them another way to feed. Wade discovers a feral vampire in London. And the entire group travels overseas to provide help as they can. But the feral vampire has been out of human contact so long, Philip and Wade fear the only thing to be done is to kill him. But Eleisha decides to take a chance and connect with the vampire at her own peril. This is the fourth installment in the Vampire Memories series. The character development within Eleisha's group, especially with Philip, has been progressive and dramatic. Each book in the series has a standalone story, but the overlying arc is suspenseful as the demented Julian follows Eleisha's every move. This latest story is just as thrilling, dramatic, and engaging as ever. The feral vampire is completely unpredictable, yet sympathetic. This is fantastic blend of urban fantasy and gothic vampires. Dark, vivid, and captivating - this series is a must for fans of the vampire subgenre.

For those that like psychology?, December 16, 2011
This review is from: In Memories We Fear: A Vampire Memories Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
In Memories We Fear, by Barb Hendee, is the fourth installment in the Vampire Memories saga. It's an urban fantasy with a low level of sexual content (kissing and a small amount of sensuous touching) making it accessible to the young adult crowd. It's an uncommon story that could go either way depending upon your taste. For myself, In Memories We Fear was a little lacking in things I've come to enjoy. Our main group of characters include vampires, ghosts and a psychic human. An evil elder vampire , Jullian, is out to destroy the vampires that are seeking to free themselves from the old ways of killing the person they drink blood from to survive. The main group of good guys are coming together to find other like-minded individuals and teach them the very first law of the vampire code: "never kill when feeding". Each member of this group brings different talents to the table which results in the story taking on an adventure flavor while out on the hunt for those like themselves. Along the way, a series of vicious killings and word of a feral vampire loose in the streets of London sends the gang overseas to investigate, tracking down their fellow vampires before Jullian can nab them first. This story is definitely heavy in the psychological department, for those that like to forgo the action-packed bloodfests this would be a good fit for you. I do love a good romance in my novels, but Hendee creates characters with no sexual knowledge or history leaving me a bit confused as to why that gene was apparently cut out of these vampires' DNA. One of the characters, Phillip, was very needy, clingy and always bored so his character started to become quite annoying at times. Eleisha is a soft spoken empathic vampire who gives Counselor Deanna Troi a run for her money. At times the dialog is very engaging, yet at other times things seem to flounder around which has the unfortunate net result of loosing any footing gained in previous chapters. It's a mixed bag of emotions for me: I liked aspects of the book but the lack of believable characters and overused situations had me skipping along pages in chapters towards the back half. To be fair this was also the first book I've read in this series but I feel no real need to go back and read what lead up to the current edition. I'm on the fence about continuing any further with the Vampire Memories saga. I'd suggest to proceed with caution and possible check around at other reviews as well. I Smell Sheep--[...]

strong urban fantasy, October 5, 2011
This review is from: In Memories We Fear: A Vampire Memories Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
Many vampires remain in hiding afraid to come out in the open out of obedience to the first commandment that thou shalt not kill a human though thou can dine on one. Thus vampires remain concealed so they can take human blood with impunity by erasing the encounter from the mind of their prey. Eleisha offers a safe haven for her Undead peers to reside in once she finds them. Portland based vampire lovers Eleisha Clevon and Philip Brante and Wade Sheffield the human try to find the lost vampires and bring them to their new home. Elisha adheres to the first rule and mentors others to do likewise. When she finds a lost soul she tries to persuade him to move to the sanctuary but Jeremy wants to kill him just like he committed genocide on his own race. His desire is to drink and kill those he drinks from. They learn of an apparent feral rogue vampire killing humans in England. The trio travels there where they meet centuries old Maxim living in a forest with no memory of human skills. She wants to bring him in safely, but Julian wants him dead. The Vampire Memories urban fantasy novels (see Blood Memories and Hunting Memories) is a strong series that enable the audience to believe that vampires live amongst us in places like London and Portland. Elisha and Philip are an interesting pair of lovers as he is her protector but he becomes frustrated with her obstinacy that she can save Maxim who he believes should be executed. Barb Hendee provides a spellbinding vampire thriller with a touch of romance and a lot of intrigue as the undead rescue squad disagrees on what to do with the latest Lost Vampire found.
