About the Author

Born in Carlisle, Margaret Forster is the author of many previous novels including LADY'S MAID, MOTHER'S BOYS and SHADOW BABY. She has also written bestselling works of non-fiction, including biographies of Daphne du Maurier and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and HIDDEN LIVES and PRECIOUS LIVES about her own family. She lives in London and the Lake District. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From AudioFile

After both her father and stepmother die, Catherine finally brings herself to open the box that her birth mother left for her before dying when Catherine was six months old. As she traces each item's meaning and pieces together her mother's short life story, Catherine herself changes. This is an introspective novel, with almost no action and little dialogue. In the hands of a different reader it could have been very boring. However, the quality of Clare Higgins's voice is well suited to the story. She portrays the Scottish voices flawlessly, doing particularly well with the men's voices, and modulates Catherine's voice so that it never drones or bores the listener. This is an example of a superb performance enhancing a rather ordinary novel. S.S.R. © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

4.0 out of 5 stars The first review, September 17, 2000

This review is from: The Memory Box (Audio Cassette)
Margaret Forster takes us on a wonderful journey through Catherine's discovery of her dead mother. The 'memory box' her mother leaves her daughter as she dies, when the child is only six months old, reminds us of the importance of personal history and the sense that it gives us all of our grounding in life. The journey that Catherine undertakes leads her to question her own lifestyle and the relationships with her father, stepmother and Tony her boyfriend. To the very end she reconciles her feelings for the mother she tried to ignore and discovers unexpected truths about herself. The box for thirty years enclosed and contained within the attic of her family home, once opened like Pandoras Box, couldnt be closed again. An engaging story which will make you question your history.

This is my least favorite of all the Margaret Forster books I have read. I found it very difficult to stay interested in the whole novel and felt that the storyline really didn't go anywhere.

I came across this book through "the reading group, by Elizabeth Noble". She has a great list of books to read.
